DPM Calculator for Exchange

Hi,

I am planning to deploy DPM 2012 on Exchange Server 2013 environment. There are 3 exchange servers (DAG). Database size is approx. 600 GB. I want to keep the backup for at least 6 months. I tried DPM Calculator for Exchange and it output 200+ TB for storage.

Is that correct or am I missing something?

Please help me to size the DPM Server.

Thanks.

Exchange 2013 Eseutil integrity check failed

I installed fresh copy of SCDPM 2012 SP1.

When I tried to backup Exchange 2013 databases with Eseutil Integrity check, backup failed with:
Data consistency verification check failed for LOGS of Storage group ArchiveStorageGroup on Server.domain.local. (ID 30146 Details: Unknown error (0xc0000135) (0xC0000135))

Circular logging on Exchange server is disabled.

I copied Eseutil.exe and Ese.dll to C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\bin folder.

Databases are backuped successfully without using Eseutil Integrity check.

Thanks for help in advance!

Hi Guys,

Can anyone point me to any documentation for DPM 2012.
I'm looking to find out if Granular Restore functionality is available for SharePoint 2013 and Exchange 2013 when using DPM 2012.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have raided google but can't seem to find anything concrete.

Thanks,

How do add Db from Exchange to Dpm2010

Is it recomanded to run a Exchange 2010 database maintenance in DAG environment on the Mailbox-Servers if we run eseutil on DPM 2012 protection groups

Hi all,

we have 6 Exchange 2010 Mailbox servers an a DPM Server 2012 wich is protectin the mailbox databases. In the Protection Group Options we Select "Run Eseutil to chck data integrty" and "Run for lof files only" because of DAG.

Is it still recomended to run a 24/7 an database maintenance on the exchange servers or is it sufficient to let DPM do th database check on the backup side?

What ist the best practise setting for exchange 2010 servers if DPM ist setup up like above?

We want to avoid I/O trouble or eseutil job collision between exchang and DPM.

Thanks

how DPM protecs DAG

I have two mailbox servers (Mbx1,MBx2) that are members of dag 1 ,

server MBx1 has the following databases:

IT,manager,ecco in active state

nami,users,invy in passive state

server MBx2 has the following databases:

nami,users,invy in active state

IT,manager,ecco in passive state

I I inherited a single DPM 2010 server that has one protection group which includes all databases under mbx1 and all databases under MBX2

I think that this configuration uses a lot of free space because It is taking backup for each DB 2 times

Quetion

if I remove all databases under mbx2 in the protection group and keep all the database under MBX1 .what will truncate the logs of server MBX2

could you give me any solution

free space in dpm

dear all

I have a problem with the free space in dpm

I have 2 mailbox servers called mbx1 and mbx2 and are dag members

mbx1 has the following database : a,b,c which all are active and d,e,f which are passive

mbx2 has the foolwing database : d,e,f which all are active and a,b,c which are passive

so accordingly I created 12 protection group named exchange dag that include both server mbx1 and mbx2  in dpm 2010 :

the members are : a,b,c,d,e,f databases in mailbox1 and a,b,c,d,e,f databases in mbx02

the rentention range is 5 days

the database copies selected for full backup :a,b,c,d,e,f databases in mailbox1 and a,b,c,d,e,f databases in mbx02

the used space is 1,642.23 Gb

the free space is :57.76 GB

should I remove the the passive a,b,c databases of mbx2 from protection group and   the passive d,e,f databases of mbx1 from protection group

I inherited the server and I don't know why he added the passive database of each mailbox server

Cannot Add Exchange 2003 SP2 Store in DPM 2012 SP1

Hello,

System Center DPM 2012 SP1 installed.  Exchange Server running is Enterprise 2003 SP2.

Within DPM, I am able to add the volumes on the Exchange server and back them up successfully.  I am not able to add the Storage Group and receive the message:

One or more prerequisites for protecting this data source is missing.
Ensure that the following prerequisite software is installed on arsenault02.AA.local and/or all nodes in the cluster:

  • Windows Server 2003 SP1 with Knowledge Base article 940349 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=99034).
    Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98933)

ID: 31305

I have reinstalled the agent two times on the protected server.  I have, I believe, verified WMI connectivity and the ability of the servers to see that the referenced Hotfix is indeed installed by using these commands:

On the DPM server:  get-hotfix -computer ps_name | ? {$_.HotfixID -match "KB940349"}

On the Exchange server:  wmic qfe list > c:\temp\qfe.txt

I have checked the status of the writers and there are no errors.

I am stumped and really need to get this working as I am already 2 days past my deadline.  I hope someone can help.

Thank you.

Exchange 2010 Mailbox Recovery not possible

Hi

I am trying to recover a mailbox from DPM 2010. Restoring the entire Exchange database works fine, but i'm unable to select a mailbox in DPM. If I double-click the mailbox database in the browse tab, nothing happens. If I search for a mailbox I get no result.

What am I doing wrong? In the event log I can find no errors or warnings.

My setup:

- DPM server is in domain1, Exchange in domain2, no trust. I configured the agent with setdpmserver.exe. Backup and restore of entire database works fine.

Thank you for your help!

Unable to protect Exchange 2010 databases on secondary DPM server

I am trying to protect 4 Exchange 2010 databases that are part of a DAG on a secondary DPM server.  When I add the PG, I get to the Review Disk Allocation and get the following error:

The operation failed because the data source VSS component 287d78db-a4bb-4474-aaa5-aeac38aeec45 is missing.

Check to see that the protected data source is installed properly  and the VSS writer service is running.

ID: 915
Details: The operation completed successfully (0x0)

Does anybody have any idea what that means or how to get past it?

moving exchange dag protection to a new dpm server

Hi,

Im trying to migrate from my older win 2008r2 with dpm 2012 sp1 server to a newer 2012 server with dpm 2012 sp1. The way i plan to do this is to stop protection on the old server, uninstall the agent on the proctected server from the old server, reinstall the protection agent from the new server to the protected server then recreate the protection group on the new server.

Im now trying to re create my exchange protection but im getting an error selecting the group members from my DAG. the error is "You have chosen to protect replicas on another DPM server (primary DPM server) id 148. later on it complains again "one or more of the selected data sources are already configured for protection on the primary DPM server. Id 31162

This new server is a brand new install so it shouldn't know about the existing primary server. I checked on the exchange server in the DPM installer folders and there was an activeowner folder which had details of my old DPM server, so i uninstalled the agent, deleted the whole DPM folder on the exchange server and reinstalled the agent from the new primary but i still get this error, i ran the setdpmserver command to point to my new server with no luck

Exchange 2010 SP2 as VM - what is the best approach to backup with DPM 2010

Hi,

I have a Exchange 2010 SP2 VM on Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP 1. I just added DPM 2010 to the mix (running from dedicated physical machine).

What would be the best way to backup Exchange? Should I install only DPM client on Hyper-V host and let it do all the job from that level or should I go for the internal DPM client installation or for both?

Thanks

Exchange Recovery Point volume 3 times normal size while log file size in Exchange is consistent

I've had a situation recently where we've moved Exchange protection to a new DPM 2010 server. The version of DPM and hotfixes, agent etc is the same as previous server.

The Exchange log on two Mailbox databases was around 2GB on Mailbox DB1 and 5GB on Mailbox DB2 for a 24 hour period. DPM would register transferred data on RP as 4GB on DB1 and 10GB on DB2 (rough average per night).

Recently I am seeing transferred to RP volumes, 12GB on DB1 and 30GB on DB2 per night, but not consistently. (backups are 1 Express Full nightly).

I have run a heavy weight consistency check on both Exchange Mailbox DB's and behaviour remains.
I also ran a test today and verified on DB1 that log file size was 800MB and DPM transferred to RP approximately 7GB.
I've checked for recurring/failing mailbox moves or imports into Exchange.
I've checked scheduled tasks on the Exchange server to make sure no offline defrags or file system defrags are scheduled.
A/V is also not scanning Exchange.

Disk may be cheap but I'd certainly like to know why DPM is behaving this way and consuming significantly more RP volume space. Has anyone come across this and know of a solution.

Backup Exchange 2010 DAG servers for DR

$

Hi

I'm invesitigating how best to back up our Exchange 2010 servers for a worst case DR scenario.  We have 2 virtual and 1 physical servers in a DAG and the scenario is that our building has burned down and we are at a 3rd party DR site with only our backup tapes.  We have a virtual environment and a SAN at our disposal and we can quickly restore one of our domain controllers.  Now we have to restore the Exchange 2010 servers and the mailbox databases.

I have tried to build a new Exchange server in the DR environment using the RecoverServer switch but it fails as the DAG is missing.  I think this method is for where one server is missing from the DAG so doesn't apply here.  So I looked at backing up the Exchange servers themselves and restoring them first but Microsoft are very clear about not using snapshot syle backups on Exchange servers which our current technology does.

I have a few questions:

1.  Can Data Protection Manager 2012 be used to backup the entire Exchange server i.e the OS, Exchange binaries, databases and log files so that the complete server could be restored?

2.  I can understand why snapshot style backups can't be used on the databases and log files but does this also apply to the server OS, Exchange program files etc?  I'm wondering if I can restore a server and then restore the mailbox databases.

Thanks!

Using DPM to seed a new remote Exchange DAG

We have two sites in question one on west coast and the other on east coast of US.  Sites are connected via a 20Mbps WAN pipe.  Each site has a DPM server that backsup the local environment but is not interacting with the other sites DPM environment.

Our Exchange 2010 environment has 5 mailbox DB's and is currently setup with local DAG groups.  At our west coast site we have 3 Exchange MB servers so say E1 has the primary DB and E3 has the DB1 DAG.  We have a requirement to extend out our MB environment to the East Coast.  We will bring-up 2 new MB servers on the EC and plan on placing a DAG copy of the West Coast DB's in enterprise activation mode on 1 of the 2 servers.  Our EC and WC sites will be a single DAG group and during failover the connection will be to say failover.orgname.com
Our WC mailboxes are around 300-400GB in size.

Some things we were thinking was to create a 6th MB DB, create its DAGs and then slowly bringing mailboxes into it from say DB1.  This will cause it to sync properly.  Another way we were thinking was via DPM where we would pre-seed the EC site with a DPM backup of the most recent DAG copy of say MB1.  Our concern through all of this is any log file buildup on the WC databases.

Can we use DPM in this manner?  Implications?

DPM 2010 backup planning

Hello there,

I have an DPM 2010 environment where i am using IBM LTO tape library with 24 Cartridge and 2 TB of internal disk. I have a schedule backup of data server which has around 700 GB data and exchange server which has around 500 GB database. Exchange is in DAG environment so i can't backup it directly to tape. So, how much space do i exactly have to allocated for exchange to backup and what should be the retention period by DPM.

DPM 2010 Exchange 2010 Service Pack 3 compatibility

Can anyone verify if DPM 2010 is supported with Exchange 2010 Service Pack 3? I know there are allot of Schema database changes in the SP3 install. We are looking at installing SP3 for Exchange 2010 but wanted to verify that this will not cause issues in respect of DPM 2010 being used to backup the infrastructure.
