Backup of Exchange DAG database through DPM2012

$

Hi,

We have a DAG setup and taking the database backup through DPM 2012.

We have enabled backup from both the nodes in protection group for taking database backup but while recovering we are able to find the recovery points only for one node where the database is mounted. Please clarify me do we get recovery points for both the nodes or the node where the database is mounted.

Thanks

Sunny

Backing up an Exchange 2010 DAG with more than one DPM 2012R2 servers

Hi,

we have an Exchange DAG with than 10000 mailboxes so we would like to protect it with two different DPM Servers.

I have read that this is supported.

Is there anything special I have to consider?

Except of course that only one DPM can back up one specific Exch node.
So can I just "setdpmserver" for example the first 5 Exch nodes to DPM01 and the second 5 Exch nodes to DPM02 and configure Exch Backup as I am used to?

Kind regards

DPM Express full backup would cause transaction log truncated?

"

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj642923.aspx#BKMK_Methods

Express full backup— An express full backup is a type of synchronization that transfers and synchronizes only a snapshot of all blocks that have changed, either since the initial replication or since the last express full backup. It’s faster than running a full backup. Recovering the data from an Express Full Backup produces the same result as recovering data using a full backup. The express full backup uses DPM filter technology to identify the changed blocked instead of requiring DPM to read all the data or use checksums. This significantly reduces performance load. Express full backups are considered copy-only full backups and do not result in log truncations for applications that support incremental backups."

http://blogs.technet.com/b/timmcmic/archive/2011/09/26/exchange-server-2010-and-system-center-data-protection-manager-2010.aspx

The full shadow copy is performed as part of initial replica creation and during each express full backup. The full shadow copy will include all Exchange log files and all Exchange database files and includes a call for log truncation to occur uponsuccessful backup completion

"

From the above technet , we can see the first one says "Express full backups are considered copy-only full backups and do not result in log truncations for application......" ,

but the second one says express full backup is Full Shadow Copy and  would call for log truncation ,so it sounds inconsistent, which one is correct?

My questions are:

1,Express full backups is Copy only full backups or Full Shadow Copy ?did they refer to the some thing?

2,If the Express full backups can/request the log truncation?

Thank you in advanced.

DPM 2012 - converting pass-through disk to fixed size VHD and DPM

$

Our Sr. Admin is attempting to convert our Exchange 2010 pass-through disk to fixed VHD and found that our 2008 R2 Hyper-V clustered environment won't allow him to storage migrate a VM when it has any pass-through disk.  He is formulating the next plan and since I'm responsible for DPM he is asking some questions.  We see posts where people complained that after converting pass-through to VHD they couldn't backup with DPM because the disk signature was the same but DPM expects it to be a different/new disks.  He is suggesting "having to create a new Exchange MB VM's using VHDs, add to the DAG, then add DB copies and remove the copies on the old VM with the pass-thrus and then remove the old VM.  This option is actually not that bad and I suspect we'll end up going this route because its the most well udnerstood and trustable way to do it."

We wonder if we'll run into DPM not liking the Exchange DB being on a disk with a different signature?  Will this cause, if it works, DPM to want to backup the entire DB. Its rather large.

Upgrade from DPM 2012 SP1 to 2012 R2 Backup Exchange 2010 DAG

Hello,

I have a DPM 2012 SP1 that backup Exchange 2010 DAG. The DPM 2012 SP1 runs backup of Exchange from the third instance of each database.

I plan to upgrade to DPM 2012 R2:

Can I install a new server with DPM 2012 R2 and backup the second instance of each Exchange database?
Should I upgrade agents on each mailbox server to dpm2012 R2 i order to complete the upgrade/coexistence?

Restore Exchange 2010 Logs using DPM 2012

Hi Guys,

Exchange 2010 SP2 Rollup 5v2

DPM 2012 SP1 (Version 4.1.3313.0)

We have schedule to take incremental(sychronization) back up to disk every hour in a day. i.e. 24 times a day.

Unfortunately there is this issue with the database and want to restore.

I want to only restore the log backup from the disk not the database, is it possible..?

While trying to restore it is also restoring the database which i don't want it to be as I already have copies in the DAG passive node and just want to copy the restore logs and then mount the DB.

Reason i want to approach this method is because I have to backup the 5TB data and restore it in DR site which is not feasible.

Delete disk backup recovery point

Hi Guys,

Am using DPM 2012 SP1 version 4.1.3313.0

Looking to delete the disk recovery points & using the script mentioned int he gallery - http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/DPM-2012-R2-Remove-6167f338

Somehow when i run the scripts and follow the steps till recovery points there are approx. 192 numbers out of which am not able to distinguish which one is tape and disk recovery point.

I changed my retention from 15days to 5days the older recovery points are not getting removed automatically instead of the scripts i have ran Removeinactiverecoverypoint.ps1, removerecoverypoint.ps1 & pruneshadowcopiesDpm2010.ps1

Somehow i managed to shrink but that not what am looking for. I want to delete the older recovery points than 5days and using that gallery script how can i identify which one is tape / disk recovery point.

Note: i dont want to delete the tape recovery points.

Exchange database restore fails with due to lack of disk space....

$

We use DPM 2012 to protect our Exchange 2010 SP1 DAGs. We have successfully restored mailboxes several times in the recent past. Yesterday after initiating a restore from disk, and having it run for 8 hours, it failed with the following message:

The operation failed because of inadequate disk space. (ID 2035 Details: There is not enough space on the disk (0x80070070))

The database we were recovering is just over 1TB in size. The mount point that contains the recovery db is approximately 2TB in size....so space should not be an issue. There was an existing recovery db present that was about 1TB in size from a past restore, but I set it to be overwritten....so that space in use by the previous restore would've been reclaimed by my restore.

The "recommended action" in the DPM console was to "increase the amount of free space on volume\\?\C:\ on the destination computer". The c drive on the destination computer (the one that holds the recovery db) has plenty of free space (not sure why space is needed on the C drive of the destination computer during a restore).

I have not been able to figure this out or know why I got these messages. Any advice would be appreciated.

Snapshot rollup with Long term backup to Tape

I need to reconfigure the short term disk storage, and wanted to know if I create a Long Term backup to tape, does thatstore or encompass all the "snapshot/short term" backups that I have on disk?

If so, I will be able to remove all my disk backups, reconfigure it as needed, and re-enable the short term backups without losing any of my historical backups. (For Legal reasons)

Thanks!

dpm 2010 exchange 2010 backups are failing

$

Hi, I'm getting an error which does not seem to match in the DPM 2010 ID codes. Randomly, I have backups of an exchange 2010 DAG that are failing. The backup will run for a short time (5mints..up to 10minuts) and then will fail with the following error:

Type: Recovery point
Status: Failed
Description: Backup failed as another copy of 'user' database is currently being backed up. (ID 32628 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D51)
 More information
End time: 4/25/2011 10:37:27 PM
Start time: 4/25/2011 10:26:55 PM
Time elapsed: 00:10:31
Data transferred: 0 MB
Cluster node -
Recovery Point Type Incremental Sync
Source details: 06001
Protection group: EXCH2010 - 06001

I've tried restarting the DPM server to troubleshoot. I say this happens randomly because I've had some backups successfully complete against the same exchange server. The only other item that seems odd is when creating protection groups against the DAG, the intial lookup seems to take forever. Not sure what to try next.

Event ID 3169 and 3114

Hi,

I have DPM 2012 r2 (physical server), I'm running a job that backup Exchange 2013 Mailbox DB. (I have 32 DB, 4 physical servers running DAG configuration)

I have more then 30 Terra disk space on the DPM that allocated for backup.

In DPM management (Disks section)  I can see 91% unallocated. (only 3 GB is the current backup file size.)

In the event viewer I get:

"The used disk space on the computer running DPM for the recovery point volume of  DB22 has exceeded the threshold value of  90% (DPM accounts 600 MB for internal usage in addition to free space available). If you do not allocate more disk space,  synchronization jobs may fail due to insufficient disk space. (ID: 3169)"

"Creation of recovery points for DB22 on mail04 have failed. The last recovery point creation failed for the  following reason: (ID: 3114)
DPM has run out of free space on the recovery point volume and will fail synchronization for DB22 on mail04 in order to prevent existing recovery points from being deleted. (ID: 30195)"

I can't understand why I get those events, need help with this issue

Automatically backup new exchange database on standalone Exchange server

$

Hello,

I´m currently setting up a backup against a Exchange Server 2013. One thing I noticed when I added created a new Exchange database was that it was not automatically backup up by DPM.

I've checked the box "Exchange 2013 databases" but after I created the fifth databases I noticed that it was not automatically checked in DPM and also that the box "Exchange 2013 databases" was unchecked.

How can I make sure that new Exchange databases are backuped automatically?

Cannot add Exchange 2010 Databases to DPM 2012 R2

Our Setup: Exchange 2010 SP3 on WS 2008 R2, DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 3 on WS 2012 R2

When modifying the Protection Group and selecting the Exchange Server, I'll get following error:

DPM could not enumerate application component Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\servername\8b938c89-51cf-4669-9e34-e7a0c59b5bb4 on protected computer  (ID: 964)

DPM could not enumerate application component Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\servername\8b938c89-51cf-4669-9e34-e7a0c59b5bb4\File on protected computer  (ID: 964)

Please make sure that writer is in good state.

It was working fine on our old DPM Server with DPM 2010 on WS 2008 R2.

Only thing that changed is that the new DPM Server is now in another, but trusted domain.

We have another Exchange Server in an untrusted domain, where this problem doesn't appear.

Things i have tried so far:

Checked for missing Powershell registry entries or files.

DCOM permissions seem to be configured correctly.

vssadmin list writers shows no errors

Eventlogs on both Servers don't show anything that could help me troubleshoot this.

I'm looking forward to get some advice!
