Is it possible to backup Exchange 2013 SP1 with SCDPM 2012 SP1 (latest rollup)? There is no support information available.

We use DPM 2012 to backup Exchange 2013. It works as shown the screenshot.

However, the Exchange Admin Center shows no full backup.

Also, we have a lot old transaction logs. How to DPM clear the transaction logs?

I have DPM 2012 SP1 backing up exchange databases exclusively.

One protection group is for Exchange 2010 and the other is for exchange 2013. EseUtil.exe is only working for 2013.

The 2010 databases have gigantic recovery volumes (40 GB for a 95 GB database!) while it is less than 1 GB used for Exchange 2013 ones (55 GB replica)

The 2010 sync every one hour and the 2013 sync every 15 minutes. both have express backup at 8 PM and retention for 1 day.

is there any explanation for this behavior??

the capacity on the DPM server is limited.

We have the following setup:

Exchange 2010 DAG with 4 mailbox servers. One DPM 2012 server with a Dell tape library and 4 drives.

4 mailbox databases, DB1 through DB4

One active copy and two passive copies of each mailbox database, each database copy on a separate server.

DPM Protection group is set to make a Full backup of the active database, and copy backups of the passive databases.

Here are my questions:

1. Should I be backing up the active databases Full, or should I set up a passive database for Full backup?

2. Why does DPM take a Full Tape backup of every database copy, and how can I change that?

2. Why does DPM 2012 show everything is o.k when a "Get database backup status" Powershell script that I run on an Exchange mailbox server tells me one database hasn't been backed up in over a week?

I'm trying to create a new protection group on my DPM 2010 server and I am having trouble.

My setup is as follows:

2 Servers, Primary is Win 2003 R2 32-bit domain controller, secondary is Win 2008 R2 64-bit Exchange 2010 SP1 and DPM 2010 (I wish I could put DPM on its own but we do not have the budget, has plenty of memory and processor to run apps).

We are running DPM 2010 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard edtion. We are backing up our Exchange 2007 storage group through DPM 2010. However for these past few days, it's not backing up one of our storage group and we're getting this error below.

Below are the steps we did to try to resolve issue:

1. Confirmed that Circular Logging is Disabled on the specified storage group.

2. In DPM Administrator Console, in the Protection task area, select the volume, clickCreate recovery point, and then, in the Actions pane, clickExpress full backup.

3. Run a consistency check (Currently the protected storage now shows that the "Replica is Inconsistent")

4. Stopped the protection for the specified storage group and deleted all the replica from the disk.

5. Add the specified storage group again to the protection group and run consistency check but it still appears as "Replica Inconsistent"

6. Restart Exchange Information Store and run consistency check again as what this link (http://www.buchatech.com/category/microsoft/data_protection_manager/) suggested but it didn't work.

All these steps that we did didn't solve the issue. The specified storage group still appear "Replica Inconsisten" on the protection tab of our DPM 2010 console. Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

When restoring any files it stores them in a very convoluted directory structure. I want to just restore my file that I want in a single directory!

Is there no way to just restore an item to a certain path?

We have the Visual C++ 2012 x64 redistribute installed on the DPM server and the version of ese.dll and eseutil.exe are the same as on the Exchange server.

I'm having problems backing up a Hyper-V virtualized Exchange 2007 server with DPM 2012. The guest has one VHD for the OS, and two pass-through volumes, one for logs and one for the databases. I have three protection groups:

• System State - protects only the system state of the mail server, runs at 4AM every morning
• Exchange Databases - protects the Exchange stores, 15 minute syncs with an express full at 6:30PM every day
• VM - Protecting the server hosting the Exchange VM. Does an child partition snapshot backup of the Exchange server guest with an express full at 9:30PM every day

The problem I'm experiencing is that every time the VM express full completes I start receiving errors on the Exchange Database synchronizations stating that a log file discontinuity was detected. I did some poking around in the logs on the Exchange server and sure enough, it looks like the child partition snapshot backup is causing Exchange to truncate the log files even though the logs and databases are on pass-through disks and aren't covered by the child partition snapshot.

What is the correct way to back up an entire virtualized Exchange server, system state, databases, OS drive and all?

I believe I have read somewhere that DPM 2010 can backup Exchange 2003 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399140.aspx). However, we are trying to install System Center 2012 on a VMware VM, & use it to backup an Exchange 2003 environment, at least until we move to O 365.

So the 2 questions I have are:

Can System Center 2012 - DPM (running on a VMware/EMC platform) used to backup an Exchange server 2003 environment?

If that is not possible, can DPM 2010 run on a VMware/EMC platform, which can then be used to backup the Exchange server 2003 environment?

We have an Exchange 2013 DAG with 5 servers and 12 databases.  I have setup the 3 servers hosting live database copies in DPM,2012 with one of the other servers also being used for copy backup.

2 full backups and 4 copy backups show as Ok.  The rest of the members have shown as "Replica creation in progress" since we set this up.  They do not show as inconsistent, and it is possible to right-click and create recovery points at will.  However, the status never changes.

Any idea on how to fix this?

I have a question regarding the shrinking of databases.

We have a couple of Exchange databases whose Transaction logs grew VERY large due to a runaway mobile device issue. That has since been cleared up however the databases in DPM show that something like 3TB is allocated to the recovery point volume. When in"Modify Disk Allocation" I try to shrink and it tells me "Based on the expected data churn for the specified retention range, the recovery volume cannot be shrunk further". Why does it think we need 3TB? Is there a way to make DPM realize we don't really need this much and gain it back? The retention period already passed for the old stuff to roll off, so I am not sure what the issue is.

I have the 0KB issue where it only shows 0KB used for my recovery point volumes, I know this is fixed in RU2, but that update has been pulled. Would the fact it see's 0KB also contribute to this??

We have a installation 0f DPM 2012 for backing up our exchange 2010 installation (10 db's). I recently noticed that log files are not truncationg after backup. I dont see any error message but there information message in the application log on the passive node for each DB.

The DPm server reorts that the express full backup sucessfully completed at 8:00 PM the previous night.

Help figuring out this problem is appreciated.

I am trying to create a protection group for Exchange 2010. When it comes down to picking the servers and directories...I don't see an option for "Exchange 2010 Databases" as per the screenshot on Microsoft's whitepaper on Exchange 2010 and dpm

we have 2 dpm 2012 R2 UR2 servers backing our 2010 SP3 DAG databases, one backs up the active DBs and the other the passive copies.

I have noticed significant difference in the data throughput where the active copies get backed up in minutes ie. 1-2GB per minute whereas the passive copies get backed up at 100-200mb per minute.

i know the active copies get backed up with the exchange store writer whereas the replication writer backs up the passive copies, is this by design?

we are only taking a nightly sync once of the data

currently the databases in total are <200GB but we are only part way through our migration so this will incrrease 3-4 fold in the next 6 months.

is this the best way to back up the data in two locations without transfer across the WAN links

I followed the below steps and I am able to remove the recovery points without any issue. but, removed recovery points is not removed from console. I double checked the same and tried twice.

I've just setup DPM 2012 R2 on a Windows 2012 R2 server, works fine. After successfully deploying DPM agent to Exchange Server 2007 (!) with LCR I don't see any storage groups to protect in DPM console.

Do I have to install the old Exchange 2007 management tools on my brand new DPM server?
