DPM Agent Communication Error

$
0
0

We get the following error sporadically, and it seems to always deal with an Exchange Server service stealing the DPMRA port. Is there any way to get this to stop. We have to put the mailbox server in 2010 into DAG maintenance and restart services. This is not optimal. The below error is what we receive. Seems to be the Microsoft Exchange Replication Service:

DPM failed to communicate with servername because of a communication error with the protection agent. (ID 53 Details: Server execution failed (0x80080005))

We run DPM 2012

Thanks

Exchange Backups Randomly Fail with "Access is denied (0x80070005)"

I have several DPM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 3 servers. Each is backing up several of our Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 6 mailbox servers.

Randomly, one or more backups will fail with:

Data consistency verification check failed for LOGS of Exchange Mailbox Database ExchangeServer MDB1 on ExchangeServer.fqdn.here. (ID 30146 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005))

The error will go on to say:

Recommended action: Either the database files are corrupt or the proper versions of the Eseutil.exe and Ese.dll files are missing.

I do have the latest versions of ESE.DLL and ESEUTIL.EXE on the DPM servers.

The thing is, this is completely random. It will randomly affect one MDB on a server, while the other MDBs on the same server are fine. Then the next scheduled backup, the one giving the error will backup just fine. Also, if I manually back up an affected MDB, it goes fine. It also doesn't affect all the Exchange servers in any consistent way. Again, it's completely random from what I can tell.

Backing up the same exact Exchange servers with older DPM 2012 (not R2) servers was fine. I never saw this error. It's only started happening since I switched backups over to newer DPM 2012 R2 servers (happened on both UR2 and UR3).

Any ideas why these jobs are randomly failing, but then fine the next time?

Cannot add Exchange 2010 Databases to DPM 2012 R2

Our Setup: Exchange 2010 SP3 on WS 2008 R2, DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 3 on WS 2012 R2

When modifying the Protection Group and selecting the Exchange Server, I'll get following error:

DPM could not enumerate application component Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\servername\8b938c89-51cf-4669-9e34-e7a0c59b5bb4 on protected computer  (ID: 964)

DPM could not enumerate application component Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\servername\8b938c89-51cf-4669-9e34-e7a0c59b5bb4\File on protected computer  (ID: 964)

DPM could not enumerate application component Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\servername\8b938c89-51cf-4669-9e34-e7a0c59b5bb4\Logs on protected computer  (ID: 964)

Please make sure that writer is in good state.

It was working fine on our old DPM Server with DPM 2010 on WS 2008 R2.

Only thing that changed is that the new DPM Server is now in another, but trusted domain.

We have another Exchange Server in an untrusted domain, where this problem doesn't appear.

Things i have tried so far:

Checked for missing Powershell registry entries or files.

DCOM permissions seem to be configured correctly.

vssadmin list writers shows no errors

Eventlogs on both Servers don't show anything that could help me troubleshoot this.

I'm looking forward to get some advice!

SC 2012 R2 DPM running ESEUTIL against Exchange 2010 SP3

Hi,

I wanted to see if I could confirm the behavior of running the ESEUTIL integrity check option from DPM against a DAG. Does this option bring the databases offline to run the check, or do they stay mounted?

By default for the DAG it recommends running against the log files only (which probably does nothing to the DB anyway), but in case I were to select the option run against the DB and logs, I just wanted to be sure.

As far as I understand, since Exchange 2010 SP1, the integrity check is done online.

The option is when creating a new protection group; "Run Eseutil to check data integrity".

Thanks,

Jared

Use DPM to backup Exchange DAG can not see the database

Hi,

I want to use DPM to backup Exchange DAG, but when I create the protection group, I can't open the dag to choose the database.

If somebody can tell me what's wrong with it? How to troubleshoot this problem?

The version of DPM is 2012 sp1,and the version of Exchange is 2013.

I'm sorry that I could just provide a picture in Chinese.

Exchange reboots after consistency check

Hi,

We are protecting Exchange 2013 with dpm 2012 SP1. Strange thing is that exchange restarts every time when i run consistency check. I dont realy know what to do? I never have problem like this. Is there a problem with dpmra service or something else?

DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 4, Update Rollup 7 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3 backups with eseutil check fail

$

Hi,

It could be a coincidence, but ever since installing Update rollup 4 onto DPM 2012 R2, (which was at UR3 I believe) I haven't been able to complete an Exchange express full backup or consistency check with verification using Eseutil checked. If I have the eseutil check enabled I get the following error:

Type: Consistency check
Status: Failed
Description: Data consistency verification check failed for LOGS of Exchange Mailbox Database Mailbox Database 2011112513 on SERVER.xxx. (ID 30146 Details: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (0x80070020))

Disabling the eseutil verification allows it to succeed, but I'm not happy to continue with that for too long.

I've had this running for many years and this is the first real issue with exchange, its a single stand alone exchange database.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Andreas

unable to add DAG nodes to DPM 2012 protection group

Dear all,

my customer wants to backup Exchange 2013 using DPM 2012. I tried to follow http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/management-administration/continuous-backup-exchange-server-2013-dpm-2012-part2.html for DPM Client deployment.

DPM 2012 is located in child Domain child.domain

Exchange Mailbox databases are Setup in DAGs, now they need to move the databases from the forest root Domain to the child Domain.

After adding additional Mailbox Servers to the DAG and placing additional Mailbox database copies to the DAG nodes located in the child Domain now we want to deploy DPM Agent to These Servers in child.Domain (same child domain as the DPM 2012 Server is located).

As we are talking about child Domains, a two way trust is present. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773178(v=ws.10).aspx ; Computer DNS names can be resolved fine (forwarding Zone on DC present, also).

Some older Exchange Mailbox Servers are located in the  forest root Domain. DPM Agent is already deployed to these clients.
Unfortunately I'm not very experienced with DPM. When we try to deploy the Agent directly, it just Returns "unable to install the agent". I cannot find any logs in the eventlog.
If I tried to attach a previously installed agent, DPM agent says "unable to communicate with the client", but I can access the
ADMIN$ share and I have no firewall between the hosts as they are located in the same subnet.
Of course I already checked after turning off the Windows Firewall manually (port tested via telnet).

When I check the DAG Computer account on DPM Management console it showed only the nodes located in the forest root.

Can you please geive me a hint where to start Investigation?

Regards,
Martin

Protection of Exchange 2012 SP1 DAG with DPM 2012R2 not working - Replica is Inconsistent

$

We are struggling to get DPM 2012 R2 to protect our Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG, and receiving the error "Replica is inconsistent". I have copied the current versions of eseutil.exe and ese.dll to the DPM servers, and the DPM agent is the latest version on the Exchange boxes.

The sanitised error is:

Affected area: Database123
Occurred since: 10/11/2014 11:39:02
Description: The replica of Exchange Mailbox Database Mailbox Database123 on <servername> is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)
Data consistency verification check failed for LOGS of Exchange Mailbox Database Mailbox Database123 on <servername>. (ID 30146 Details: The extended attributes are inconsistent (0xFF))
 More information
Recommended action: Either the database files are corrupt or the proper versions of the Eseutil.exe and Ese.dll files are missing.
If you have recently upgraded your Exchange server, copy them from that server to the DPM server.Contact your Exchange server administrator, and then verify the issue. You can recover the last known good backup to address the corrupted state.
 Synchronize with consistency check.
Run a synchronization job with consistency check...
Resolution: To dismiss the alert, click below
 Inactivate

Running a synchronization job with consistency check does not work and we end up back to the same error. Circular logging is not enabled.

We are starting an upgrade of Exchange 2007 to 2013 and the DAG has little in it yet, and the Exchange 2007 environment is being backed up by a different product that we are moving away from.

Any suggestions welcome

exchange backup on custom volume

$

Hi,

for one of my exch databases i need one year retention. So, on DPM server I created two custom volumes, one for replica, other for Recover Point. DPM performs one express full backup daily nad syncronization just before recovery point.

DPM console shows replica volume used 3 GB space and recovery point used 5 GB. When i look on physical disk used for replica, i can see files and logs and all the changes. On physical disk used for Recovery Point, there is no files (or hidden files). it looks like physicly backup is stored on replica disk, but DPM shows changes only saved on RP disk and only RP disk space is decreasing.

I have to plan long retention and disk capacity, so my question is if someone have experience with long term protection on custom volumes and how data was distributed between replica and RP disk? What capacity for RP disk and for Replica disk should i reserve?

DPM 2012 R2, EX2007SP3, and EX2013CU5 Coexistence Scenario - Failure to Backup Both Sources to 1 DPM Server

$

All, I've got the following Exchange Coexistence Scenario that I'm attempting to backup:

Exchange 2007 SP3 RU12 - 2 MBX CCRs, 5 MBX standalones

Exchange 2013 CU5 - 1 DAG with 6 nodes, all multirole

And I am attempting to back it up with:

DPM 2012 R2 (KB3009516 update applied) - 1 DPM server with storage and tape library installed, 1 SQL server (dedicated)

The problem that I'm running into is that as part of the Exchange backup prerequisites it's stating that I need the latest ESE.DLL and ESEUTIL.EXE that exist in the environment, but I'm running into errors backing up 2007 when I have the 2013 ESE.DLL and ESEUTIL.EXE files in the BIN directory, and errors backup up 2013 when I have the 2007 files in the BIN directory - and obviously since they're named the same, they can't both exist at the same time!

Does anyone know of a workaround for this without me having to dedicate another piece of hardware - along with storage - to backup this environment?

The sad part is that I can manually swap out the files and back either one up - and if I have to do that... well, someone should have figured out a better solution to this a long time ago.

Hello. I have DPM 2012 R2 (Update Rollup4 Installed), protecting Exchange 2013 CU6. From Friday i get the following error message:

"

Type:Recovery point
Status:Failed
Description:The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError:The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.

Recovery points are not created (short term protection) and backup to tape also fails (long term protection).

How can i fix this?

Regards.

Recover Individual Mailbox

When the recovery of individual mailbox when doing recovery in recovery mailbox database
size recovery base starts to grow uncontrollably and threatens to spend all my disk space,
though mailbox size is not large. (Disk space 2TB, DPM 2012 R2 - Microsoft Server 2012 R2, Exchange 2013 - Microsoft Server 2012 R2)
Are you in recovery restores the entire database in recovery database and then individual mailbox
back to the original address or the recovery base returns only individual mailbox?
Why do so many size of the database grows?

DPM 2012 SP1 - Exchange 2010 and 2013, Replica is inconsistent

Hi,

We have DPM 2012 backing up some of our VMs, including Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013. We have never had a successful backup with no errors for the Exchange databases. Have tried:

1. Restarting IIS on Exchange servers

2. Installing Visual C++ on Exchange 2013

3. Dismounting mailbox databases and truncating logs

4. All vsswriter statuses are stable

Error messages on the Exchange 2010 are:

"Event 9782 MSExchangeIS: Exchange VSS Writer (instance f7510d9f-4e76-44ce-8e62-f4f6b262fc7b:5) has completed the backup of database 'Admin Mailbox' with errors. The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database."

"Event 2007 ESE: Information Store (1780) Shadow copy instance 5 aborted."

Error messages on Exchange 2013 are:

"Event 2038 MsExchangeRepl: Microsoft Exchange VSS Writer backup failed. No log files were truncated. Instance 4da58804-0535-469d-a2c3-6df332dfab33. Database f39b8e25-7a5c-4baf-b4fe-fbe8844fc463."

"Event 2006 ESE: Information Store - Primary Staff (7416) Shadow copy instance 2 completed successfully."

"Event 2034 MsExchangeRepl: The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer (Instance 4da58804-0535-469d-a2c3-6df332dfab33) failed with error FFFFFFFC when processing the backup completion event."

Please help. Backups worked fine in DPM 2010. SQL databases are being backed up successfully from same DPM 2012 server.

Thank you.

SCDPM 2012 R2 Backup with Exchange 2013 SP1 CU6 DAG

Hi,

Correct me if I'm wrong.

DAG setup as follow,

1. Server1\MBX01 (Active)

2. Server2\MBX01 (Passive)

DPM

1. Select Full for Active

2. Select Copy for Passive

We always select active copy so that logs can be purge.  On the other hand, if we select backup passive copy and purge logs. My guess is logs will be replicated from Active copy.

How about when active copy change passive copy?  Do I need to change the backup option?

Please advice. Thanks.

DPM 2010 - Exchange Server 2003 Re-Directed Restore

$

Hello people. I am looking for some help. We currently have DPM 2010 on Windows 2008 R2 backing up Exchange Server 2003 SP2 on Windows 2003. We are trying to migrate our existing Exchange server DBs (physical server) to another Exchange Server 2003(VMware VM) in the same domain and site. We are trying not to go the P2V route if at all possible. The existing Exchange DBs are about 1.3TB in size. The existing server has 4 Storage Groups, with a total of about 20 mailbox stores. We are trying to get the data migrated within a 48 hour window, which at this point eliminates moving the mailboxes to the new server using Exchange task - Move Mailbox. I am also thinking RSG would not be a good option for us as the existing mailbox server will remain operational until all the data has been migrated to the new server.

Is anyone out there aware of a document that walks through the process of doing a re-directed restore of Exchange Server 2003 DBs, backed up using DPM 2010? If a redirected restore can be done, how does AD get updated to reflect the new HomeServer for users' mailboxes? Can the DBs simply be restored as raw files to the new server and be successfully mounted?

Thank you in advance for your support.
