Exchange 2010 Mailbox Recovery not possible

$

Hi

I am trying to recover a mailbox from DPM 2010. Restoring the entire Exchange database works fine, but i'm unable to select a mailbox in DPM. If I double-click the mailbox database in the browse tab, nothing happens. If I search for a mailbox I get no result.

What am I doing wrong? In the event log I can find no errors or warnings.

My setup:

- DPM server is in domain1, Exchange in domain2, no trust. I configured the agent with setdpmserver.exe. Backup and restore of entire database works fine.

Thank you for your help!

DPM 2010 and Exchange 2003 Restore edb missing

Hi All,

i am seeing a strange issue with the Exchange 2003 restore. I am attempting to restore the entire mailbox store to a network location, however after a sucessfull restore i go to the folder and the edb is missing. i watch the restore and i can see the 99GB file up until the last few minutes and then it is gone.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks

Russell

Protect Exchange 2010 with DAG on DPM2012

$

Hi,

With Exchange 2007 it was possible to backup the passive node and active node only in case of problem. With Exchange 2010 we have to make a full backup of the active database and a copy of the passive. I cannot see any way to avoid this new strategy.

For me there are two big problem:

1- the backup consumes resources on Exchange by backing up active node

2- we must at least double the space dedicated to the backup... or triple if we had a third server into the Exchange DAG. It's VERY expensive.

(Even if I could read that the copy takes less space than the full backup, by testing I can see exactly the same space used by replica and RP by each databases into the 2 servers of the DAG)

3- when the role change into the DAG, the backup admin must be aware to change the strategy for the full backup and copy.

I read this topic: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dpmexchbackup/thread/e76d57a5-5536-4c43-95b8-ea2a636ba054 where we can see: "it is recommended that you protect at least two copies of the DB" OK, and it's probably better to have 3 copies and, why not, 10 copies :-D Seriously, I understand this recommendation but I have a question: what happens if we have a third-party software to manage the archiving?

At the end, we have 2 servers for Exchange, DPM and a archiving tool, it means that we have to buy disk to store 5 copies of a database (2 into DAG, these 2 are backed up by DPM and on for the archive). Someone will probably answer that we can avoid it by moving all databases on only one node... but in this case we lose the most important improvement with the DAG: the opportunity to have 2 servers active in parallel to share the load.

Finally, I want to know if there is a way into DPM to avoid the copy and keep only a full backup and/or is there improvements to wait about it into DPM and/or Exchange?

Regards :)

DPM has detected a discontinuity in the log chain for Exchange

Hi,

We have a number of DPM deployments and recently two of these have started resulting in the above error.  Both of these networks only use DPM and do not have any other backups scheduled.  Does anyone have any advice on this particular issue.

Thanks,

dpm 2010 exchange 2010 backups are failing

Hi, I'm getting an error which does not seem to match in the DPM 2010 ID codes. Randomly, I have backups of an exchange 2010 DAG that are failing. The backup will run for a short time (5mints..up to 10minuts) and then will fail with the following error:

Type: Recovery point
Status: Failed
Description: Backup failed as another copy of 'user' database is currently being backed up. (ID 32628 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D51)
 More information
End time: 4/25/2011 10:37:27 PM
Start time: 4/25/2011 10:26:55 PM
Time elapsed: 00:10:31
Data transferred: 0 MB
Cluster node -
Recovery Point Type Incremental Sync
Source details: 06001
Protection group: EXCH2010 - 06001

I've tried restarting the DPM server to troubleshoot. I say this happens randomly because I've had some backups successfully complete against the same exchange server. The only other item that seems odd is when creating protection groups against the DAG, the intial lookup seems to take forever. Not sure what to try next.

How to Recover an Exchange 2010 Mailbox using DPM 2010

$

I'm looking for a good step-by-step guide that explains how to recover individual mailbox items using DPM 2010 and Exchange 2010.  The "Protecting Exchange Server with System Center Data Protection Manager 2010" guide just glosses over it without giving detailed steps as does the TechNet article "How to Recover a Mailbox".  I realize that in Exchange 2010, the default is 14 days for data recovery, so recovering mailbox items should be rare.  At any event, I'm would like to test the process.

I realize that I need to restore the entire mailbox database, but if I'm short on disk space on the mail server, I have the option in DPM 2010 to recover the mailbox database to a network location or to tape.  If I choose a network location, I would also create a recovery database on the Exchange 2010 server.  As I understand it, the recovery database needs to reside on the Exchange server, whereas the DPM restore would reside in the network location I had previously specified.  Once the mailbox database is restored to this network location, the following PS command will create a recovery database on the Exchange server:

new-mailboxdatabase -Recovery -Name RDB -Server MBX1 -EdbFilePath "D:\RDB\Database\RDB.edb" -LogFolderPath "E:\RDB\RD100\Logs"

This I presume creates a blank recovery database location on the Exchange server.  I would then need to issue the PS restore command, “Restore-Mailbox -Identity usera -RecoveryDatabase “RDB” (assuming the name of the user mailbox is usera) to restore the mailbox database recovered by DPM from the specified network location.... BUT how does this restore-mailbox command know to pull the mailbox from this network location over to this recovery database on the Exchange server?

Another option if all of this has to reside on the Exchange server is to attach a large USB drive to the Exchange server to use for the recovery database.  The pain is that I am running Exchange 2010 as a Hyper-V and so I would have to go through some steps to attach this drive to the Hyper-V which is a bit of a pain.

Some clarification would be much appreciated... I'll then go and test it all out.

Thanks!

Replica is inconsistant on Exchange 2010 mail database

Below is the error I recieve in the DPM 2010 Monitoring Alert.  I am using Exhange 2010 v 14.01.0289.001 on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise server.  DPM 2010 on a Windows Server Enterprise SP2.

I have been getting these erros enough that my transaction log files have taken up all of my hard drive space on the log file drive.  So I decided to remove the database from the current protect group and start over.

I created a new protection group and added the 1 mail database, ended up say it was 186GB and 485GB was allocated.

Exchange 2010 is not being backed up by anything else.  Circular loggin is not enabled.  There is only 1 copy of the database for backup.  I have ran the consitancy check with syncronization and still get the replica is inconsistant error.  I have also tried to create a recovery point with a full backup and I get an error that tells me:  "Cannot perform creation of a recovery point on a replica which is inconsistent. (ID: 31209)  Run syncronization with consistency check for this replica and then retry this operation."

This is a vicious circle - there is no solution that I see!!  I need some ideas to get successful backups so the transaction logs are removed and email can still be received!

Thanks!

1. Consult the administrator of the Exchange server to rectify the problem. Please ensure that Exchange circular logging is turned off. Synchronization jobs may continue to fail until this issue is resolved.
2. Last backup might have failed after log truncation.

In the Protection task area, click 'Create recovery point' and select 'Full backup' option.

Replica Inconsistent for Exchange 2010

Hi,

Hope someone can help me regarding my DPM vs Exchange Issue. I use DPM to backup 4 x different Virtual Servers running 2008 Standard. All servers backup fine eg. files, folders, system state but not the BMR. As soon as i add the BMR the replication fails.

Problem number 2 is the Exchange wont backup at all, the protection group is created, replication goes fine then it says 'OK" but after 1min it goes to " Replica Inconsistent " . This happens on the Mailbox, Public Mailbox and system state.

VSS Writers seems to work fine.

Most of our users are using the archive folders that are built into exchange 2010. I do not see an option to restore them in DPM 2012 or DPM 2010. We are currently using DPM 2012. Are they being backed up and how do I restore them.

DPM 2012 RTM

Exchange 2010 V14.2 Build 247.5

Exchange 2007 V8.3 Build 83.6

ESEUTIL and ESE.DLL installed on DPM Server: 14.2.283.0

Background:  Company is currently 3/4 through migration from Exchange 07 to 10.  Currently using DPM to backup the Exchange 10 environment and BUEXEC 12 to backup Exchange 07.   I need to hopefully move our 07 backups to DPM.   I took over DPM recently and reviewing protected computer software requirements and see a couple things that raises questions

Q:  1)  If I'm have the ESE versions indicated above on the DPM 2012 server will I be able to backup an Exchange Server 2007 that is in a Clustered Continuous Replication Configuration.

2)  Re: KB940006 Update Rollup 4; as I'm on SP3 I don't think this applies?  Isn't UR4 from the RTM release?

DPM 2012 not showing Exchange 2010 mailbox for Recovery

Hi there,

We are using DPM 2012 to backup our Exchange environment.  The Exchange environment includes two Exchange 2010 SP2 and a DAG is configured.  We have created a protection group in DPM with the DAG selected.  We have configured the protection group to be backed up onto disk daily and then backup onto tape weekly.  However, when we go to the recovery tab and select the Exchange database from the recoverable item, we do not see any individual mailboxes.  It only shows the Exchange database so we are only able to recover the whole database not the individual mailboxes.  Is there anything else that I need to configure to have the mailboxes showing?

Thanks

Backup Exchange 2010 DAG servers for DR

$

Hi

I'm invesitigating how best to back up our Exchange 2010 servers for a worst case DR scenario.  We have 2 virtual and 1 physical servers in a DAG and the scenario is that our building has burned down and we are at a 3rd party DR site with only our backup tapes.  We have a virtual environment and a SAN at our disposal and we can quickly restore one of our domain controllers.  Now we have to restore the Exchange 2010 servers and the mailbox databases.

I have tried to build a new Exchange server in the DR environment using the RecoverServer switch but it fails as the DAG is missing.  I think this method is for where one server is missing from the DAG so doesn't apply here.  So I looked at backing up the Exchange servers themselves and restoring them first but Microsoft are very clear about not using snapshot syle backups on Exchange servers which our current technology does.

I have a few questions:

1.  Can Data Protection Manager 2012 be used to backup the entire Exchange server i.e the OS, Exchange binaries, databases and log files so that the complete server could be restored?

2.  I can understand why snapshot style backups can't be used on the databases and log files but does this also apply to the server OS, Exchange program files etc?  I'm wondering if I can restore a server and then restore the mailbox databases.

Thanks!

How to Properly Protect a Virtualized Exchange Server - Log File Discontinuity When Performing Child Partition Snapshot

$

I'm having problems backing up a Hyper-V virtualized Exchange 2007 server with DPM 2012. The guest has one VHD for the OS, and two pass-through volumes, one for logs and one for the databases. I have three protection groups:

  • System State - protects only the system state of the mail server, runs at 4AM every morning
  • Exchange Databases - protects the Exchange stores, 15 minute syncs with an express full at 6:30PM every day
  • VM - Protecting the server hosting the Exchange VM. Does an child partition snapshot backup of the Exchange server guest with an express full at 9:30PM every day

The problem I'm experiencing is that every time the VM express full completes I start receiving errors on the Exchange Database synchronizations stating that a log file discontinuity was detected. I did some poking around in the logs on the Exchange server and sure enough, it looks like the child partition snapshot backup is causing Exchange to truncate the log files even though the logs and databases are on pass-through disks and aren't covered by the child partition snapshot.

What is the correct way to back up an entire virtualized Exchange server, system state, databases, OS drive and all?

I have DPM 2010 protecting an exchange 2010 (14.1.218.15) db in a DAG with 2 copies.  In DPM One is selected as a full backup and one as the copy.  After the backup is complete the log files are not cleared out.  This started earlier this month.  I don't see any relevant event log entries on the exchange servers or dpm server.  Any help is appreciated!
