errors when adding exchange 2010 to a protection grup

$

Hello!

I've seen this question asked before but with no answers for a solution so ...

I have a hyper-v environment of 2008 r2 servers; one of them has DPM 2010 installed, another has exchange 2010 and the rest are irrelevant in this matter

Whenever I try to add the exchange server to a protection group I get several errors "DPM could not enumerate application component microsoft exchange server ..." and "please make sure the writer is in good state" - in the list all the services from exchange are visible and able to be set in a backup plan except for the exchange database (the only thing that actually is needed to have a backup...)

vss writers are ok, backups on that server work (not the exchange db, but everything else), this same error happens with or without exchange sp1 ...

If possible I'd like a clear answer if something can be done and have a reliable dpm server or do I have to start looking for another backup software (email backups are a must in my organization)

Valid Exchange 2010 DAG setup for protection by DPM2010?

$

Hello,

Could someone please validate that we have configured our Exchange 2010 DAG setup to be protected by DPM2010 correctly. Because right now every night when the express full backup runs i get an error event id 9840 “backup failed because the database is already in the process of being backed up”:

We have x4 exchange servers all in single AD site; x2 configured as CAS/HT WNLB – working perfectly no problem. THEN x2 exchange server configured as mailbox role, joined together in a DAG:

Mailbox server1 has DB1 & DB3

Mailbox server2 has DB2 & DB4

Within the DAG, DB1&3 are copied to server 2 AND DB2&4 copied to server 1

DPM2010 setup = single Protection Group covering complete DAG, incremental copy every 2 hours, express full back-up once per day at 22:00.

Initially I set the DPM incremental / full backups as per active environment; that is Server1; DB1&3 Server2; DB2&4 THEN the daily copy backups on the copy databases, so server1; DB2&4 Server2; DB1&3

As I started to get error 9840 straight away I thought maybe I have setup DPM incorrectly and so changed incremental / full backups assigned to ALL DB’s on server1 and daily copy backups on ALL DB’s on server2. I understand DPM doesn’t care if it is working with either a live or copy database… But still I get error 9840 – not on all DB’s; on server1 the error is related to either db1 or db3, and on server2 the error is linked to either db2 or db4.

Have I made a mistake with the way Exchange DAG is configured to load production dbs across two servers? OR a mistake with DPM and Protection Group configuration? Any idea how i can stop the errors?

Regards

Mark

dpm 2012 sp1 beta not running exchange recovery points since sp1 upgrade

Since we needed a way to back up our 2012 file server, we upgrade our dpm server to sp1 beta. Since doing so, our exchange recovery points (two different protection groups) no longer run. They continue to show a healthy green check mark though. This resulted in the logs filling up one of the drives which alerted us to the problem.

Is this a known issue? Is there any way to make the schedule kick back in? Manual recovery points work fine.

DPM 2010 and Exchange 2010 (DAG) passive node backup - can NOT see it in DPM GUI

Hi

I have a problem with backing up Exchange 2010 DAG (passive) with my DPM 2010.

I can take backup of the active DAG node, but the passive is NOT showing up in the DPM 2010 GUI, when selecting the DAG clustername.

If I move all the databases from the active node to the passive node, and then modifies the "Protection Group" of Exchange 2010 and selects the DAG clustername, the I can see the active databases on the "new" active node.

So backup works on both DAG nodes, BUT only if it is "active" :-s

Normally you will be able to see both the active (for "Full Backup") and passive (for "Copy Backup") node.

My question is now, is it my Exchange 2010 enviroment og my DPM 2010 enviroment that have a problem?

I you have any more questions or information you need, feel free to contact me :-)

Setup:

DAG clustername SRV208

 DAG node 1 SRV209

 DAG node 2 SRV210

DPM server 1 SRV101

Best regards,

Lars

Consistency Check Failing - Access is Denied (0x80070005)

Hi,

I have an issue I am looking for some advice on. Basically I have DPM 2010 backing up my exchange 2010 environment. It backs up to disk on an hourly basis and then to tape on a weekly basis. What is happening is that the backup will run fine on the hour every hour bar the odd occasional issue. To give an example, the server was backing up my exchange DBs fine all day yesterday, then at 6pm one of the backups failed with this error:

Type: Recovery point
Status: Failed
Description: Data consistency verification check failed for LOGS of Exchange Mailbox Database DB-3 on MAILSERVER.domain.local. (ID 30146 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005))
Cluster node -
Recovery Point Type Incremental Sync
Source details: DB-3
Protection group: Production Email

The wierdest thing is that 60 minutes later it tried the hourly backup again and ran fine that time. I dont understand why it is failing with access denied on one run then fine on the next. Anybody got any ideas? Whilst my exchange knowledge is advanced, my knowledge of DPM is limited.

Regards, John

Bare metal for exchange server and file protection

Both Exchange Servers are separate, standalone deployments with POP and no mails reside on Exchange side catering to approx. 60 users.

My question is :

1.Do i have to back up the Exchange server since mails are dont reside the exchange server it self?

2.How do i manually calculate the DPM storage for exchange 2007 using following command?

Replica Volume

For Exchange data:

Data source size x (1 + log change) / (alert threshold - .05)

Retention period

For Exchange data:

4.0 x retention range in days x log change x data source size + 1600 MB

3.How do i calculate the storage for bare metal recovery for each and every server?

Thank you

Mahesh

Backup Exchange 2010 with 6 DAG Members

$

Hi all,

we are running several Exchange 2010 DAG servers (I am not a Exchange guy) hosting several thousand mailboxes.
The DAG servers are located in two different rooms.

On that that site we have two DPM 2010 serves but only one should be used for backing up Exchange.

Most mailboxes are hosted on 4 DAG members - at the moment it is configured in a way that one copy is configured for full backups, the other 3 copies are configured for copy backups - I think it is configured correctly.

But we have some problems regarding load and capacity (although we use NetAPP DeDup which works great).

So my question: Is it possible regarding best practice and /or supported config to backup just two of the DB copies?
One for full backup and the other one for copy backup?
When one room is destroyed will DPM automatically switch DAG servers and continue backing up?

Thanks in advance

regards

/bkpfast

Select passive or active copies for DAG

$

Hi,

DPM 2010
Exchange 2010 DAG set-up

I'm fairly new to DPM so please bear with me.
When selecting the databases for protection, my understanding is that I should select only one database copy in the first screen then one copy in the copy backup screen. Best practice say’s to select two copies.
If I select the 'mounted copy' for the first one and then the passive copy for the copy backup I don't get the option for Synchronization frequency. Instead, I only get the option to schedule an express full backup.
Whereas, if I select the passive copy for the first one and then the active database as the copy backup the Synchronization frequency is available.
Can someone explain to me when this happens?
I hope I explained this well enough

Problem with lcr exchange2007 and DPM 2010

Hi all,

does anybody knows are there any known isssues between dpm2010 and LCR on exchange 2007?
I have a problem enabling LCR and I think DPM is somehow responsible for that.
When I disabled protection on exchange I could get LCR on second storage group only, but then when I wanted to reenable protection with DPM I couldnt.
First storage group couldnt be backed up with LCR.

Any suggestions?
thanx in advance

Receiving an error when trying to add Exchange server to DPM (Error ID 964)

I'm trying to create a new protection group on my DPM 2010 server and I am having trouble.

My setup is as follows:

2 Servers, Primary is Win 2003 R2 32-bit domain controller, secondary is Win 2008 R2 64-bit Exchange 2010 SP1 and DPM 2010 (I wish I could put DPM on its own but we do not have the budget, has plenty of memory and processor to run apps).

I am trying to create a protection group (using the wizard) to backup the Exchange mailbox database, but I am receiving an error when clicking on the + to expand the selection window.

DPM could not enumerate application component Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\SERVER01\17a465cc-90ca-4abd-927f-9aed49f33b5e on protected computer Server01.hq.vidcad.com. (ID: 964)

Any thoughts or ideas on what I could be doing wrong? This is a fresh install of DPM and Exchange has been running perfectly for a few months now.
Thanks in advanced for your help!

DPM 2010 Exchange 2010 Mailbox recovery

Hi Experts,

We are backing up Exchange 2010 Mailbox Database with DPM 2010. When I try to recover a single mailbox (just for testing), I can only see the Mailbox Database and not the single users. I read about it and a lot of forums describe that it is only possible via PS. But I saw a few videos like this:

http://technetklub.hu/tv/Default.aspx?auth=0&sid=b190b6a1-c350-4e81-a230-e408afd7950a

In this video the trainer selects the user mailbox from the DPM Recovery console with expanding the contents of the Mailbox Database.

So, what do I have to do to be able to recovery a single mailbox from the DPM console?

Thanks for any replies,

Dvijne

Exchange Database Recovery - Error: Alternate storage group or the database specified is invalid. (ID 30198)

When trying to restore a mailbox database from DPM 2010 I'm getting the error 'Recovery failed for Exchange Mailbox Database Database1 on {exchange-server-name} as the alternate storage group or the database specified is invalid. (ID 30198 Details: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057))'

I have created the recovery database with this command:

new-mailboxdatabase –recovery “recoverydb” -ebfilepath “D:\restore\RDB1.edb” –logfolderpath “D:\restore\” –server ExchangeServerName

Following the steps outlined in this post: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dpmexchbackup/thread/0fbc3b4e-b85f-4e69-928b-5d37bf4da7a5

I can see the database in the exchange console and have set the ability for it to be over written with by the restore.

I go into DPM and select the recovery point I would like to recover from and then select the mailbox, right click and recover. I have been though the wizard and selected a Recovery Type of 'Recover mailbox to an Exchange server database'. I have specified the server the RDB has been created on and the database name: ‘RDB1’.

On the final page of the wizard the progress bar goes for a few seconds and then it comes back with the error 'Recovery failed for Exchange Mailbox Database Database1 on {exchange-server-name} as the alternate storage group or the database specified is invalid. (ID 30198)' in red.

I have tried recreating a new RDB, having the RDB mounted and unmounted . There is enough space for the recovery.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try next?

Thanks, Joe

Data Protection Manager 2010: Replica Inconsistent, Recovery point creation failed

Dear All,

I have DPM 2010 running on Windows Server 2008 SP1.

I have three exchange server 2010 SP1 running as DAG. it has 9 database on each servers. 1 active and 2 passive.

I create backup 3 protection group:

Protection group: Group1

ServerExch01

DB1, DB2, DB3, DB4,... DB9

Protection group: Group2

ServerExch02

DB1, DB2, DB3, DB4,...DB9

Protection Group: Group3

ServerExch03

DB1, DB2, DB3, DB4,....DB9

My problem is:

It is always Replica Inconsistent, Recovery point creation failed by random of each database as fixture below:

As this fixture of DB2, it has problem "Recovery point creation falied", so I need manually right click on DB2 then select "Perform consistency check".

What should I fix this issue?

Express Full Backups not running when sheduled in Protection Group

Dear DPM Backup Guru's,

Environment: DPM 2010 / Exchange 2010

The PG that I have configured is just backing up a copy of an exchange DAG DB. The Express Full backup is scheduled to run at 8PM. When you look at 'Today's Jobs' it is in the schedule to run at 5PM. This is a pretty HUGE exchange environment so I have quite a few PG sets to get thru all the DAG DB's. The PG's have staggered start times. All the jobs in the 'Today's Jobs' list are all off -3 hours. I've tried removing DB's from protection and rebuilding them in a new PG thinking that maybe the PG was corrupt. That didn't change anything. I figure I could just add 3 hours to the start time in the PG so that the jobs would start when I wanted them to but that is just a 'Band-Aid' fix.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

James

Exchange 2013 Support?

I've been trying to back up a new Exchange 2013 Server, but have been unsuccessful with both 2012 and 2012 SP1 Beta DPM instances.

DPM is unable to enumerate application components; more succinctly, the client logs state thate DPM does not recognize the Exchange application version number.

Exchange 2013 Documentation indicates there are two supported backup methods: native Windows and DPM. I am wondering if this is something we can expect to be forthcoming very soon?

Error ID 30216 Full exchange log drive, inconsistency, circular logging.

$
0
0

I'm hoping someone can see this quickly.

Exchange 2010 server's log file location filled up. Exchange stopped working. Circular logging is off because DPM 2010 is doing incremental back ups. No problems on short or long term back ups so I don't know what happened there. Regardless, I need to make sure it's back up.

In a panic I just deleted log files (instead of moving them, I know I know.) So now DPM is giving me an inconsistent state, (ID 30216) because the log chain was broken.

I just need to make sure that these are the steps to get back to consistent and a good recovery point and that the log directory truncates when it's supposed to. I'm confused about the steps.

 1. Turn circular logging on.
 2. Dismount store
 3. Mount store
 4. Turn circular logging off.
 5. Dismount store
 6. Mount store
 7. Run consistency check in DPM.

At some point, I've got to see that the log files are being truncated. Also, should there be a 3a) remove all log files? I'm not sure how an inconsistency is going to be fixed without having all the log files back.

I should mention the drive is filling up as we speak. I'll likely have to do something soon.

Thanks.

Hi,

I am using DPM 2010 for exchange dag backup. For past couple of days backup for a single database is failing with error replica is inconsistnet. I tried stopping the consitency check on the protection group but still fails. Even after repeated try for consitency check it fails again.

The replica of Exchange Mailbox Database DILMBX01 on SRVDILMB01.bharatserums.com is not consistent with the protected data source. DPM error ID = 30133. (ID 33123)

Following are the error on the mailbox server, also there is no vss error:
