Exchange 2007 HyperV and Guest level backup possible?

$

Hello,

I have Exchange 2007 running as a HyperV virtual machine.  I would like to back this up using DPM 2010 via the hyperv host server to get a complete copy of the VM, but also by installing the DPM guest components on the Exchange VM to backup the database.

Is this possible, as backing up the entire Exchange VM causes the transaction log files for the Exchange database to be deleted.  Will this cause problems when I then backup just the database via DPM?

Thanks,

Chris.

need to copy dpm data to cloud

i'm trying to copy protected data off of the dpm volumes and into s3 using cloudberry.  is there an easy way to read the volumes?  i tried mounting them and that seems to be locking up the files causing inconsistent replicas.  is there a way to dump out a copy of the data i'm trying to copy up to the cloud?  if that is the case is it possible to do it incrementally?  i can't upload huge files like that everyday.

DPM 2010 & Exchange 2010 + ESEUTIL

Hi

I am testing out DPM2010 in a test environment. I am no "Exchange Expert" so pardon if I may sound ignorant.

I am setting up a protection group for a single Exchange 2010 server. The server has a mailbox database around 250GB, archive database of around 20GB and public folders around 200MB. The server is not a member of a DAG

When creating a protection group it gives me the option: "Run Eseutil to check data integrity". If selected, you must select one of the following options: "Run for both database and log files (maybe slow if databases are large)" - OR - "Run for log files only (Recommended for DAG servers)".

I know that if you want to check data integrity using ESEUTIL from the DPM server, one needs to copy over the ESEUTIL.EXE and ESE.DLL files over to the DPM server's bin directory.

This is where my questions come in:

* Do you really need to check data integrity using ESEUTIL and why?

* If the above (first) question's answer is yes, should I use the option for both database and log files - OR - only log files, and why? It was mentioned that the option for both database & log files may be slow if the databases are large - how large is large in this context?

* If the option is selected to check data integrity using ESEUTIL, how often does this happen / when is it triggered and how long can it take to complete?

* What is the difference between checking data integrity with ESEUTIL via DPM server and a consistency check via DPM server at whatever scheduled interval(s)?

Create protection groups for exchange in DPM power shell

Our current configuration is DPM 2010 and Exchange 2007. I would like to see some examples of how to create protection groups from the DPM shell. We have some along the line of 700+ storage groups in our environment. Actually it more along the line of 700+ CCR and 700+ SCR storage groups. Being able to script the creation the of these will be beyond helpful.

Also, I would like to see how this will change for Exchange 2010. Our environment is going to be upgrading to Exchange 2010 DAG in a few months and I would like to have the option to create new protection groups thru the DPM shell as our environment is migrated.

Thanks!

DPM 2010, Exchange 2007 trying to backup.

Greetings,

I have an edb of roughly 700Gb. The logs are around 1TB I think since my drive is 1.8TB and I only have 99Gb left of free space.

I did a syncrhonization that replicated around 1.8TB of data. The problem was that eseutil timed out. Now there is a consistency check in progress that has been on for three and a half hours with 0Mb transferred data, I've read people saying they've seen eseutil running for days!? I'm starting to worry because the disk was 1.7Tb and I had to expand the drive using 100Gb from our SAN in order to bring the store back up.

I read that I could create a registry entry to extend the timeout for eseutil. I unchecked the use of eseutil from the protection group after eseutil timed out.

I'm coexisting between 2007 and 2010, but I haven't moved anyone to 2010 yet. 2010 exists, but 2007 CAS, Mailbox are doing all the work.

I don't want to be paranoic but I feel like walls are starting to close in : )

Is that normal behavior? Should I do something else? Any suggestions?

Thank you very much for your help, I'm a bit desperate to backup the server.

upgrade to exchange 2010

We are using dpm2010 currently to backup up exchange 2007 - we are ugrading exchange 2007 to exchange 2010 and need to know if i can back both up in the interim on the same dpm server - i was able to add the DAG (i'm not an exchange admin) but the problem i noticed is that there are two different eseutil's .. so i don't see how this will work.  I am also wondering if i can mix the data on the storage pools?  It would be nice to not have to build a new server and add new storage.  If I must do this, can i host dpm2010 on a vmware virtual machine?

thank you for any help

DPM 2012 Exchange 2007 DPM has detected a discontinuity in the log chain for

$

Hi

I have recently deployed DPM 2012 on a Site, and created a Protection Group to backup 3 Exchange 2007 Databases, the solution seemed to work fine for a week. The Client has migrated a large amount of mailboxes - One of the Storage groups will no longer backup and an error stating "DPM has detected a discontinuity in the log chain for ....."

I currently have the protection group configured to create a Recovery point every 4 Hours and to run an Express backup at 12 am Each Night

From reading previous post there may be a conflict between the Recovery Point and Express Backup - Could somebody please advise on the best approach to resolving this issue - I am potentially thinking about - changing the Recovery Point Creation to run once every 24 hours and then run an Express backup at 1 am

Would appreciate if somebody to assist

Exchange DAG secondary protection with Data Protection Manager 2012

$

Hi,

I've been building secondary protection for our DPM 2012 server. Everything else is working correctly except Exchange DAG secondary protection. When i'm trying to add this DAG in new protection group in secondary DPM, i cannot see it in the list under primary DPM. How can i get this working?

Both DPM's are version 4.0.1920.0. Both DPM's have their own SQL's.

Kind regards,

Matti

Why does DPM 2010 delete ALL Exchange logs from the Exchange Writer Volume folder when it fails?

$

OK environment:

* Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1 (x64)
* DPM 2010 (v3.0.7706.0)
* Exchange 2007 Standard SP3 w/Rollup 5 running on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1

Situation:

* DPM server in head office, Exchange server in remote office connected via an IPSec VPN
* Exchange Server not backed up for over a week

Now I've just been babysitting this backup since last night, looks like it's going fine but the firewall on the Exchange side has a problem so the "Create a Recovery Point" job fails.

Up to this point around 19GB of logs were copied, when it failed ALL 19GB of logs were deleted by DPM so these now have to be recopied by DPM again which was around 14 hours.

WTF?  Why the hell would DPM be programmed to do this, this is a truly mad decision.

This is not the only time I've seen this and it has hampered recovering from blips with DPM before.

Can anyone explain this?

DPMRA Service will not start on Exchange 2010 Server

After observing that backups were not able to communicate with agent. I saw that the DPMRA service had stopped on my exchange server.  When I try to manually start the service I receive this error.

The DPMRA service terminated with service-specific error 10013 (0x271D).

DPM 2010 Exchange 2010 exclude messages from specified sender

We are running a single server Exchange 2010 environment. We are considering using DPM 2012 as a backup solution. Does anyone know if you can exclude messages from a specified sender or email attachments with a specified name (e.g. voicemail.wav)? We don't want to back up the voicemails sent to mailboxes from our Cisco VOIP solution. Thanks.

DAG protection for multi-site

$

Hello,
We have two sites and have a four node Exchange 2010 DAG.

Two nodes are located at one site and two at the other.  There are three copies of each database within the DAG.

At each site, two nodes hold the primary and secondary database copies for the local users, for on-site resilience, and then the 3rd copy exists on the opposite site, for site redundancy.

We have two DPM servers; one at each site.

I plan on protecting the DAG using one DPM server then replicating this backup to the second DPM server.
My question is;  how often do I really need to protect my databases?

Considering there are 3 copies of each database, do I really need to protect them continuously throughout the day?
I was thinking, only one express full daily would be more than enough.

Many thanks

SBS 2011 DPMRA constantly crashing

DPM Server is running on Server 2008 R2.  Fully updated as of november 15.

DPM Client on Server 2003x64 - runs consistently; never has failed.

DPM Client on Server 2008R2x64 - runs consistently; never has failed.

DPM Client on SBS 2011.  Has failed every couple of weeks or so since I installed it 6 months ago.

Every time it fails, it shuts down.  When I restart the service, it starts and stays started for 8 minutes, then stops again.  This continues until I reboot the client server.  When I reboot the client server, the DPMRA client connects and makes backups for a week or two then does the same thing again.  This behavior has been consistent no matter what updates or hotfixes/rollup are installed on the DPM server or client.  Rebooting my exchange server every week or so is not very convenient.

Keep in mind that the other two client continue using the DPM server during this with no problems.

Also, the SBS machine has no other failures or service interruptions in VPN, Exchange, or AD.

Unable to protect Exchange archive databases using a different DPM server

$

Hello,

We have an Exchange DAG spread across two sites.  We also have a couple of Exchange 2010 database servers that host our exchange archive databases.
These two servers were being protected by one of our DPM servers.

I needed to change it so that they were protected by a different DPM server instead.
This is what I did.

I removed the protected servers from the protection groups on the first DPM server.
I then went to each of the protected servers and ran the SetDPMserver command to change the protection from DPM1 to DPM2.

I went onto the DPM2 server and attached the agents.

I created a protection group on DPM2 and added the Exchange databases, which is when I received the following message:

One or more of the selected data sources are already configured for protection on the primary DPM server.  When you switch back protection, the replicas of these data sources will be protected from the primary DPM server. (ID 31162)

Hmmm

So, I did the following:

I uninstalled the DPM agents from both of the protected servers.

I manually installed the agent on each server and then attached them back to DPM2.

I created a brand new protection group and received exactly the same message :(

Why does DPM think these servers are still being protected by DPM1?

How can I fix this?

Thanks

Exchange DPM backup inconsistent after Exchange upgrade (SP2 -> rollup 4)

After upgrading my Exchange environment DPM is showing the backups are inconsistent. Understandable so I copied the new eseutil.exe and dll over upgraded the Mgmt tools and tried again, but same thing. Since the databases upgraded, do I just need to wipe out the protection group and create a new one?

I have a DPM 2010 with Windows 2008 R2 x64 to backup one mail server with Exchange 2007 with Windows 2008 Enterprise x64, both machine's have all updates and the mail server have all rollups to. The mail store that i try to backup don't have the CCR or LCR active.
I can´t backup the mail store because the DPM gives an consistency error. The VSS on the mail server don't show any error's and i don't know what happens, can you help me ?

The error on DPM say's:

The replica of Storage group *** on *** is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized
with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

The operation failed for Storage group *** on *** because the data source is not available. (ID 30169 Details: VssError:The specified object was not found.
