DPM not showing Mailboxes (Exchange 2013)

$

Hello everyone,

My DPM is able to backup Exchange 2013 DAG, but it's not showing the individual Mailboxes to Recover.

I saw the post https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d29829b3-17cf-45d8-9a66-281160c09c53/dpm-2012-not-showing-exchange-2010-mailbox-for-recovery?forum=dpmexchbackup

I should add "Read Exchange Information" to the Users which are not displayed, but "Read Exchange Information" is not available as property in my Active Directory.

I only have some "Read msExch..." Properties in Active Directory... but no "Read Exchange Information"

We are running Windows Server 2012 R2

Thanks you for every kind of help

Regards

Logs - operational logs filling up the C drive? can DPM backup and purge them like transaction logs?

$

Our new 2016 Exchange server setup keeps having an issue where the C drive gets below a threshold and external mail stops flowing.  We clear the exchange logs and it is fine for another week or so.    Is backup with data protection manager supposed to backup and purge those logs like it does with transaction logs? If so , how do we get it to do that?   Currently we are running a powershell script to manually delete logs every day.

$IISLogPath="C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\"
$ExchangeLoggingPath="C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Logging\"
$ETLLoggingPath="C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin\Search\Ceres\Diagnostics\ETLTraces\"
$ETLLoggingPath2="C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin\Search\Ceres\Diagnostics\Logs"

I am told DPM is supposed to be doing this for us?

DPM seems to be clearing the transaction logs as it should.

DPM 2016 RU4 and Exchnage 2016 DAG CU7 - no Log files truncated

Hi

I have a very strange Problem

DPM 2016 RU4 installed on Server 2016 (No DC, no Exchange)

2x Exchange 2016 CU7 on Server 2016 with 1 DAG

I tried to make a backup like this:

the Database copy Settings are this here (on Server 2 there are the passive copys)

The protection Group now:

Full Backup at 08:00 and 20:00 is running. In Eventlog threre are entries like:

ID 2046 - Database log truncation has been requested for this database. Log truncation will occur on the active copy after the next log generation is created. Log truncation will occur automatically on the passive copies after that log file is copied.

but when Im looking on the storage into the Databse directories, no log files are truncated. All Log-files from 28.12. 2017 (EX01-DB01) or 21.12.2017 (PFProxydatabase)

Why? What is the reason?

Any ideas / help????

best regards

We have offered a DPM Primary server to backup Exchange environment. The solution provided is single point of failure so in case of any hardware failure.

Please advise how we can utilize the secondary DPM to start protecting all of the workloads that were previously protected by the primary DPM server.(Replica) Can this be done via Hyper-V replication ? How is the HA reached ?

Thanks..

DPM 2007 to 2012R2 upgrade

Hi,

I have a customer who are running Exchange 2007 SP3 RU15 and DPM 2007. I am in the process of upgrading them to 2013 (Cant put 2016 in due to a lot of 2007 servers being scattered around in the org).

DPM 2007 is installed on a 2003 server and I want to install DPM 2012R2 (This is their approved version so no 2016 available) on a new 2012R2 box.

What approach should I take? What I would like to do, if possible, is to have a solution that will allow me to decomission their 2007 servers and consolidate the 2007/2013 backups in a single location.

Is that possible?

Restore Mailbox Database from old Exchange version

Hello!

I want to ask if there is a way to use DPM and restore old Exchange Database version.

I have on my production environment Exchange 2013 and I want to restore mailboxes from Exchange 2010, can I do that with a Recovery Database on Exchange 2013 or do I need to have Exhange 2010 installed on my enviroment?

I read some articles that said we need installed the old Exchange version and the old Active Directory functional level.

Should I use third party tools to restore from old Exchange versions?

I will appreciate any advice.

Best regards.

Consistency of ese.dll and eseutil.exe for DPM 2016

This document seems to indicate that a hardlink can be used to keep the ese.dll and eseutil.exe files consistent:  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/dpm/back-up-exchange?view=sc-dpm-1801.

However, doesn't ese.dll and eseutil.exe need to be copied to the bin folder on the DPM server from the Exchange server?  If that is the case, how can a hardlink be used?  The article seems to imply the copy is in the DPM agent folder on the protected Exchange server, not the bin folder of DPM.

we have DPM 2012, Exchange 2010. Is there a way to take a full back after circular logging has been enabled

DPM 2012, Exchange 2010.

Due to space limitations, we have had to enable circular logging.  Is there a way to force a full Backup, so that the nightly DPM back up will work?

We need to keep circular logging on due to space, but most days the logs will not truncate.

Is there a way to make the system work?

Mailboxes aren't showing up in DPM Recovery Points

Hoping someone can assist here. We are trialling Azure Backup (DPM).

When we are backing up our Exchange Mailbox Databases, they complete without any issue. However, when we come to restore an individual mailbox, there are only HealthMailboxes shown under the recovery points in DPM (Screenshot Below).

There are way more mailboxes on these databases, so I'm not sure why they aren't showing up in Recovery Points.

Can anyone advise?

No Exchange log truncation with DPM host Backup when guest OS is Windows Server 2016

Hello!

The Problem:
No Exchange LOG truncation after full backup of an Server 2016 VM. We use Exchange 2016.

But it only is a problem within VMs where the guest OS is Windows Server 2016.
We use DPM 2016 to backup multiple exchange Servers from an Hyper-V Cluster.
We take full backups from the VM. Every Exchange Server is in an different Domain.
The backup integration service was activated and updated.
It works perfect on every 2012R2 server. On 2016 server, not matter which updates or cu we use. Also the latest DPM Update did not help.
The problem also occurs on fresh installations of Windows 2016 + Exchange 2016.
When I install the same configuration on an fresh Windows 2012R2 it does works instantly.
When I check the exchange 2016 database on the Windows 2016 server there I no date in “last full backup”.
Dirty workaround:
DISKSHADOW
ADD VOLUME “Database Volume”
BEGIN BACKUP
CREATE
END BACKUP

When I use this workaround, exchange starts the log truncation and I also see an date in “last full backup”.
I contacted the Microsoft support multiple times and was pushed from DPM to Exchange to Windows to DPM. All the way around and around. Microsoft support asks me the same question 100 times and gives me useless "try this, try that" support calls. I also had multiple occasions of excellent support. Not on this problem.

There is no problem when I use “VSSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS/WRITERS”.
I don´t see any relating problems the eventlog.
For me one thing is clear, it must have something todo with the integrations service. Something has changed here but I can´t find the missing link…

I also did a technet topic in the German forum… no replies there.

Hopefully you can help me.

Affected area:Mailbox Database 1929457494
Occurred since:12/7/2018 12:34:44 PM
Description:The replica of Exchange Mailbox Database Mailbox Database 1929457494 on server is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)

Recover database to recovery group (external DPM Tapes)

We recently reinstalled our backup-server. DPM v1807

Now, I have to recover a Exchange 2013 database to a recovery database.

The database was backed up before the reinstall of the DPM.

I can recatalog the tapes without problem, and the Exchange servers / databases are listed under "External DPM Tapes"

However; when I try to recover a database I can only recover to a network folder. Not to a recovery database.

Is this a known limitation, when recovering from external tapes in DPM?

Agent Issue - Cannot see Exchange

Hi,

I have a new DPM 1801 install.  Is working fine to backup file and SQL data to disk and to tape library.  Now trying to backup my Exchange 2010 server but am having issues.  I was able to backup that same exchange server using a previous version of DPM.

  • I've installed the agent from the DPM server.
  • I've copied to two files from Exchange to the DPM server bin folder.  Rebooted both systems even.
  • When I create a protection group for that single server (no DAG) I see only "Shares" and "Volumes".  Nothing about the Exchange farm.  I can expand the shares and volumes normally, but there should be a section for exchange outlining the database available for backup and stuff.
  • Any tips?

DPM 1801 on Server 2016 with SQL 2016 SP1 in a local named instance. Has very recent updates for everything.  Exchange 2010, VM hosted in Azure (that shouldn't matter), a 10-15 windows updates are needed so its not super out of date, mostly for .net stuff...

DPM 2012 R2 - Exchange 2013 on Hyper-V 2012 R2- Agent level backup of Complete Server vs VM level backup

$

Hi -

Environment is DPM 2012 R2, Exchange 2013 DAG (2 server VMs on running in Windows 2012 R2 VM, hosts are Windows 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role)

I have an existing Exchange DAG Protection Group backing up as follows:

EXISTING DAG Protection group backup job settings (Agent level backup inside the VMs for both DAG members). This job backs up ONLY the exchange database (no volumes, system state or BMR):

Short term recovery: 15 Days, 30 minutes synchronization

Performance Optimization: Compression disabled, Consistency check: Automatic, Express Full Backup – 12:30 PM, 8:30 PM everyday

Which of the following two alternatives to backup the rest of the server would be preferred? The above job will stay in place.

ALTERNATIVE A - Backup rest of VM at the Hyper-V host
Add a registry key to the Exchange VM and reboot:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtualization\VssRequestor Set Value to 1 for NO TRUNCATE
Create a new Protection Group backing up the entire VM from the Hyper-v Host with no exclusions
It is hoped that this backup will not interfere with the above existing Exchange DAG job or corrupt the database

ALTERNATIVE B - Backup rest of VM with the agent in the Exchange VM
Create a new PG that backs up all volumes on the VM, as well as System State and BMR
Would I need to exclude any Exchange edb or log files or is DPM smart enough to not interfere with these

Neither A nor B would do an Express Full at the same time as the Existing DAG job.

Thanks!

Exchange 2013 file and folder exclusions for backup

$

Hello -Someone in the Exchange forum recommended I ask here:

I am using DPM 2012 R2 to backup my Exchange 2013 DAG members (currently, database only).

I now want to add to a different backup job the rest of the server. volumes (C:\, data drives, system state, etc)

DPM allows me to exclude specific folders or specific filetypes.

1) Do I need to exclude any specific folders or filetypes from the job?

2) If so, what should be excluded?

Thanks!

Hello,

I would like to know if we can force DPM to always use the passive copy of an Exchange database. Is it configurable or is it workload aware?

Thanks,

I  just read a post that said that it is not "supported" or does not work to backup Exchange 2016 using DPM on a backup disk that is formatted for REFS?  is this true?
