Consolidation of recovery points of the replica failed for Exchange Mailbox Database

$

Hi!

Since we had a some failures of the iscsi target providing disk to the DPM server which caused all
PG to become inconsistent. We receive this errors on 8 of the 48 protected DBs.

40 of the 48 DBs in the DAG where Ok after a consistensy check but when running it om the 8 left I get.

The replica of Exchange Mailbox Database DBName on serverfqdn is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)

An unexpected error occurred on DPM server machine during a VSS operation. (ID 207 Details: VssError:The specified object was not found.  (0x80042308))

When I try to run a consistensy check I get this (imediatelly) on the DPM server Application log.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Volume/disk not connected or not found. Error context: CreateFileW(\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy4890,0xc0000000,0x00000003,...).

Operation:
Query diff area for this volume

Context:
   Volume Name: \\?\Volume{e25a7f45-a154-11e4-80df-00155d172404}\

I can reach the volume, so can anyone explain or point me to a guide that shows how DPM
consolidates recovery points and is there any way of logging failures to get an more exact error message?

Is there a way in the DPM Shell to force DPM to reconsolidate the protection for one DB?

Appreciate  any help pointing me in the right direction on this one.

DPM 2012R2 agent on Exchange 2007 Support

For the short term before we upgrade to Exchange 2016, I am running Exchange 2007 SP3 UR 17, and want to use DPM 2012 R2 UR 11, however the agent for this requires the installation of .NET 4, which when I check the Compatibility Matrix for Exchange 2007 is not supported, and searching around I can find articles that say don't install it, it breaks things. Exchange 2007 is on the supported matrix for DPM 2012 R2, so there must be a way to get everything working, has anyone got a solution?

On top of that, I'm also planning on using it to backup SharePoint 2007 in the short to medium term (in case you haven't guessed by now, we're ditching another backup product), and I believe the same applies to that.

Thanks in advance

Change Protection Job - Without losing Old Recovery Points

Hello Team,

We have Exchange 2016 for which we are using DPM 2012 R2, configured the protection job with 8 databases in the beginning before it was in production and synchronization frequency is every 4 hours. Now, we have moved to production and it is observed that job are being triggered and most of the time other protection group synchronization is also initiated and due to which whole exchange servers are being to hung state.

So, we are planning to remove the old protection jobs and create the new ones with new schedule. The biggest challenge here is the old recovery points. We do not want to lose the old recovery points which will help is having the backup data.

Is there any possibility wherein we can configure the job without deleting the old recovery points.

Thanks for all your inputs.

Regards,

Sirish Oggu

Hi all;

For some reasons, I have renamed my Exchange Server mailbox database. After doing this action and trying to re-protect it, DPM does not recognize the renamed mailbox database...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Exchange 2016 with DPM2012 R2 - Error "Database is currently being backed up"

$

Hi all,

We use DPM 2012 R2 to backup an Exchange 2016 DAG of 4 databases.

Regularly, the backup failed with this error message on DPM :
Backup failed as another copy of 'DB2' database is currently being backed up. (ID 32628 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D51)

At the same time on the concerned Exchange server, there is this error messages in the application logs :

EventID 2140
Source MSExchangeRepl

The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer encountered an exception in function Microsoft::Exchange::Cluster::ReplicaVssWriter::CReplicaVssWriterInterop::PrepareSnapshot. HResult -2147467259. Exception Microsoft.Mapi.MapiExceptionDatabaseError: MapiExceptionDatabaseError: Unable execute Prepare on snapshot. (hr=0x80004005, ec=1108)

Then there is another error message on Exchange server at the same time :
Event ID 2026
Source : MSexchangeRepl
The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer (Instance 99cd0e02-c148-41f6-8fb5-0e82b18cd6d7) failed with error 80004005 when preparing for snapshot.

Then the backup job on DPM wait during one hour without transfering any datas. And finally the backup job failed with the aforementioned DPM error message

This issue not happens on every schedule or every server. Usually after I see this error, I do a "resume disk backup", which works well... and later the job fails again

I tried to monitor the value "BackupInProgress" of the Exchange databases, this value never change even during the backup

DB sizes :
DB1: 800GB
DB2: 1100GB
DB3: 30GB
DB4: 650GB

The DB3 never had this issue...

I tried different schedule, always same issue (6hours synchronization, 12h synchronization, synchronization juste before recovery point). So the last scheduled backup always has the time to finished before there is another one. Usually a backup duration is between 5 or 8 hours for the biggest database

Well then... Does anyone has an idea how can we solve this issue... ?

Many thanks for your help

P.S. Already posted this issue in Exchange forum, they suggest me to post here sorry :)

DPM 2012 SP1 - Exchange 2010 Large DB Backup with Large Trunk Files

Hi Guys,

We are trying to add a new DB into our backups on DPM.

The DB is around 1.2TB with about 775GB of Logs

DPM will not back this up, The job will run for a few hours and bombs out with the below.. Errors

An attempt to prepare the database 'XXXXXXXXXXX' for backup failed because the database is already in the process of being backed up. The error code is -2403. (Note that if a backup was recently aborted, then it may take several minutes for the system to detect the aborted backup and initiate backup cleanup procedures, so this message may be generated if an attempt was made to backup a database before a previous backup attempt had fully terminated.)

Event ID 9814

Exchange VSS Writer (instance cacba228-7f71-4257-aca0-74dbfad005ce:1203) failed with error code -2403 when preparing the database engine for backup of database 'Terminated-SDC-2016'.

Event ID 2007

Information Store (6368) Shadow copy instance 1203 aborted.

Event ID 9609

Exchange VSS Writer (instance cacba228-7f71-4257-aca0-74dbfad005ce:1203) failed with error code -2403 when preparing for Snapshot.

Any Idea's ?

The Above Event ID's are from Exchange, not much in DPM apart from.

The replica of XXXXXXXXXXX on XXXXXXXXXXXX is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. (ID: 3106)
Backup failed as another copy of 'XXXXXXXX' database is currently being backed up. (ID: 32628)

When the does bomb out the protection group shows its only backed up about 1gb.

i have tried to run a consistency check as well but we get the same issue..

Thanks for your help!

database status is showing as synchrozing

Hi,

We have exchange 2010 SP3 , 4 mailbox servers in DAG. From last 2-3 days for some of the databases the protection status is showing as synchronizing for more than 30 hours. I tried to cancel running job for one of the databases and manually ran express full backup again. But again its getting stuck on synchronizing state. After few hours data transfer also remains constant. As a result of this logs are not getting truncating and have to increase log drive size constantly.

Request some one to please help to troubleshoot this.

Parallel Backups

Hello Experts,

As a Prerequisites and limitations for Exchange ProtectionExchange 2013 can support up to eight parallel backups.

Is this means i can add maximum 8 databases per protection group. (OR) i can create maximum 8 protection groups for Exchange ?

Currently we have (DPM 2012 SP1) one protection group for two nodes (Mailbox 1 and Mailbox 2) one hosting 10 databases active and 10 databases passive (total 20 database). do i need to reconfigure this ?

Backing up ex16 DAG with dpm 2016

Good day

I require some clarity

I have the following setup:

2x exchange 2016 servers configured in a DAG with its data drives formatted as REFS.  Each server have half the active and half the passive copies of all dbs. I want to protect the dag with DPM2016.

1. According to my knowledge I can only protect one DAG node per DPM server,  is this correct?

2. Should I only backup active copies? Meaning I will need two DPM servers?

3. Or should I just backup one node with its active and passive copies?

4. Will backing up the active copy on one server truncate the log files of the passive copy on the other server?

5. Any best Practices?

Apologies for squeezing in so many questions but I find this a little confusing

Thank you

regards

Exchange DAG across sites. Do I need to add all member servers to the protection group?

$

Hello everyone,

I have an exchange DAG which has two member servers in one city, and a single member in another. I have two members(in the same city) added to my current exchange protection group.

I've only just configured the third server. It is a member of the DAG, however I haven't added any database copies to it yet.

As far as I can understand, Exchange 2016 uses federated log truncation. Which means that when DPM modifies the log, that change is replicated across all DAG members.

Do I need the third server to be a member of the DPM protection group? I was hoping to avoid it if possible

My system has changed a few times this year, due to Administrator(s) changing rights as an individual during the course of the year. Since Microsoft Technical Department assisted me I am now at a version I have not known before, should the obvious, and in that I mean what you have used before not come back onto your system as to something that you have never in your life before used, e.g. Internet Explorer?

Exchange 2010 and 2016 Coexistence With DPM Questions

$

Hello

Trying to get my environment ready for 2010 /2016 coexistence.  I will need to backup both for a period of time and want to make sure I get the process right.  My understanding is Eseutil is backwards compatible so the newest version. Is that correct? However What do I do about the path for ESEUTIL?  The current fsutil hardlink points to "c:\program files\microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\bin\eseutil.exe"

My 2016 server has installed with the followign Exchange path:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin

2010 has the following ESE Path:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin

How should I update the fsutil hardlink so that both the 2016 and 2016 will be able to backup?

Anything else to be aware of for the co-existence with DPM?

Thanks

Phil

Ask help to choose a backup strategy

Good afternoon,

I ask help through your experience to choose a backup strategy.

The organization uses Exchange 2013

CAS01-03 – CAS Servers

MDB01-03 – Database Servers using DAG

Just one Database (800 Gb) in DAG and one Archive DB (400 Gb).circular login disabled, deleted items save 90 days

CAS01,MDB01 – City A, CAS02,MDB02 – City B, CAS03,MDB03 – City C

DPM make two backups per day, save point one month. Backup DB from MDB01,02 and 03 servers

I think the backup is done too often.

I intend to:

Analyze how mailboxes grow for some period. Get mailbox statistic for the week.

Create two or more mailbox DBs

Move user mailbox, which has not increased during the week, - to DB01. And other, whose mailbox has increased to DB02.

Create new backup schedule for DB01 two days per week, and for DB02 one copy per week.

What do you advise?

Is it worth it to keep the circulation of disables? Are they needed for a differential backup?

Thanks!
