Exchange 2010 Database Backup from DPM 2012 R2

Hi Team,

My colleague had Configured Exchange 2010 Database backup in DPM 2010 that was working fine both full and incremental.

Now i have implemented the new DPM 2012 R2 and Create the Protection Group of same Exchange server 2010 DAG, In which I have selected all the DAG Members (Active and Passive) with Weekly full and incremental on every 24hrs...

I am using Disk Backup in earlier as well as currently with DPM 2012 R2..

full backup is fine but some times incremental is fine and some times i am getting below error while incremental backups only..

Once i tried to create the manual recovery of Incremetal backup also getting the same error some times and worked sometimes.

i have followed many articles but as of now issue is same . please suggest for solution.. Also I have below query...

1. While Creating the Protection Group, in DAG which DAG Member or DB (Active or Passive) copy should I choose  for the backup?

2. Is all the Active and Passive Exchange DB Backup required from DPM ?

3. steps to recover any Mailbox from DPM Disk Disk Backup , please share any Articles for that..

Error that i am getting during Incremental Backup

DPM has detected a discontinuity in the log chain for Exchange Mailbox Database on ServerName since the last synchronization. (ID 30216 Details: Unspecified error (0x80004005))”

Best Practice Exchange 2013 DAG with DPM 2012(R2)

I've been trying to read about what's the best backup method and I'm struggling to find the best way to backup up two Exchange 2013 members of a DAG using DPM.

For starters the CU9 messed up both Exchange 2013 servers. OWA and ECP functions were destroyed but mail and everything else was fine. We couldn't get the problem fixed so we rebuilt two Exchange servers. So now we have four DAG members and will decom the other Exchange members once the two new ones are set and ready.

We are in the process of setting up DPM and we are noticing a lot of errors and strange things. We have two DPM servers, one for short term using disk (A) and one for long term using tape (B). DPM A server has dpm agents on all DAG members. One strange thing is when trying to configure long term backup (B) for a DAG member is that when I go to expand our DAG, nothing shows up. Even after a refresh or server reboot. If I go on A server, all the DAG members show up.

Is there a best practice when backup up two Exchange 2013 DAG members with two DPM servers short and long?

Short term retention set to 15 days but...

Hi All,

I am experiencing an interesting phenomenon with DPM2012R2.

I have a protection group for Exchange backup. Its protection range is set to 15 days.

However, the recovery points available go well beyond that. It seems to me that they are not removed. The backup is done daily and it's an express full. Why is this happening?

Am I missing something?

Exchange 2016 Protection ?

Hello,

Currently DPM 2012 R2 does not support protecting Exchange 2016. I would like to know if this may influence your plans for deploying Exchange 2016, and or force you to use an alternate backup solution until support is added to DPM in the future.

If you feel it is very important to get support added sooner rather than later, please visit the Azure Backup and SCDPM site and add a new request or vote on an existing entry for that if one is found.   Your feedback can influence timing, so if it's important, please provide feedback.

Consistency check fails for one database in a DAG

Hi

We are using DPM 2012 R2 to backup an Exchange 2010 SP3 DAG containing ~20 databases.

All databases but one get backed up perfectly. The one that fails keep reporting that: "Replica is inconsistent".

We have verified that ese.dll and eseutil.exe are the same versions on DPM and Exchange servers and tried manually started a "Run synchronization job with consitency check" without any luck.

I can't seem to find any logs that provide any more information regarding the error. In the Application Log on the Exchange server, event 9782 (Exchange VSS Writer (instance <xxxx>) has completed the backup of database '<dbname>' with errors. The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database.) and 2007 (Information Store (4020) Shadow copy instance 2981 aborted.

Immediately after that, events 9616 (Exchange VSS Writer (instance <xxxx>) has processed the backup completion event successfully.) and 9648 (Exchange VSS Writer (instance b64d02c5-07b0-4a02-a9aa-f8dfb92bd42f:2981) has processed the backup shutdown event successfully.) are logged.

I don't have any ideas where to look - anyone?

DPM 2012 R2 cannot enumerate DAG when creating new protection group

Hello.

I have DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 8 and two Exchange 2010 SP3 Rollup 11 with latest hotfixes. When I try add my databases to new protection group, they won't appear in Wizard. I'm expanding resource and this goes nothing:

I have no visible errors in logs, neither in DPM or Exchange DAGs. What I can do?

Dpmfilterbitmap filling up drive

I have a Exchange 2007 CCR cluster and on one node I have 30 GB of "DpmFilterBitmap{9EB----}" - files.

Oldest is from 2014-11-16 and on the other node the oldest is the retention of the backup ie 60 days.

How can I remove the dpmfilterbitmap-files from the node that has to many files?

DAG backup, disaster recovery

Hi

I´m about to protect our DAG with Microsoft Azure backup Server (slightly downscaled DPM).

In a disaster recovery event, is it enough if i only backup the DAG databases with DPM or do i need something more?
We have netapp snapshots of our 2 exchangeservers as well.

so if everything dies,restore VMs via netapp snapshots, restore DAG via DPM?
Or can i even create new server and cluster and restore DAG DB on them?

I have the excel spread sheet loaded up. I have 3 Databases roughly 700 GB each on one database server. This calculator does funky things and spits out the wrong number of databases when I enter the information into it. The only way I could get it to calculate 3 DBs on one database server was to enter 2 Mailbox servers and 5 Databases on each node. On the DPM requirements tab I get 3 databases with a replica size of 734GB.

What I actually have is 1 server holding Mailbox Database role with 3 databases about 700GB each. Incremental backups ever 4 hours retention range of 90 days. Express Full backup is Daily.

My server layout is internal disks for the OS and attached DAS for DPM to use as backup space.

On the OS drive will DPM need 36 gigs ? Of the Attached storage DPM will need roughly 10TBs ?

Exchange logs not truncating in DPM

Hi All,

I have an issue where I run full backup of Exchange database using DPM, my problem is the logs are not truncating and leaves the log files in the Exchange Server its getting bigger now. Any suggestion to this concern?

I also have one mailbox database that the status is Failed and Suspended is this also causing the problem on not truncating all the logs on each mailbox database?

Exchange 2010 Dag - Different Recovery Point Volume Allocations and Usage for Members

Hi - Here is the scenario:

DPM 2012 R2 backing up an Exchange 2010 DAG with 2 members

Full Backups on Member 1, Copy Backups on Member 2

Member 1:

Replica Volume: 187 GB Allocated, 153 GB Used

Recovery Point Volume: 727 GB Allocated, 610 GB Used

Member 2:

Replica Volume: 187 GB Allocated, 151 GB Used

Recovery Point Volume: 122 GB Allocated, 107 GB Used

Why would Member 1 have a much larger recovery point volume usage than member 2? No jobs are failing,the protection group is green.

PG Settings are: Synchronization/Recovery points every hour, Express Full Backup once per day.

I have the following setup.


At production site,

DBSvr01 holds databases DB01, DB02

DBSvr02 holds databases DB02, DB03

DBSvr03 holds databases DB03, DB01


At DR site,

DBSvr04  holds databases DB01, DB02, DB03

I have a DPM server installed at DR site and I am going to setup a protection for all DBs in server DBSvr04. The protection will be set as "Full backup".

Question:

I suppose only the log in server DBSvr04 (but not the other DB servers) will be truncated. Am I correct?

Exchange DAG untrusted domain backup

Hi,

I have an exchange DAG in an untrusted domain which I need to backup with DPM.

The exchange servers run as virtual machines on Hyper-V.

Would it be alright to simply backup the servers at the host level?

I just need the ability to restore the virtual machines in case of a disaster.

I am just wondering if this is a supported scenario.

trouble with enumerating exchange dabatase

Hi all,

we have trouble with enumerating exchange database for backup . the configuration is :

Exchange server 2010sp3 , windows 2008r2 , framework 3.51.

DPM 2012r2 , windows 2012 server . 

If I try modify protection group with refresh information about Mailbox database server the DPM return :

DPM could not enumerate application component on protected computer  (ID: 964)

DPMRA service constantly crashing

The DPMRA service on my exchange server keeps crashing with the following error message in the system eventlog:
"The DPMRA service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this X time(s)." (Eventid 7034 from source 'Service Control Manager')

This is preventing any backups on the exchange server from completing (both mailbox backups and system state backups - I can see that the latter starts but is also cancelled when the agent crashes).

It appears that these crashes have started on 25th of october (no change was introduced to the server afaik); the following error was logged in the system eventlog:
"The server {DA6AA17A-D61C-4E9C-8CEA-DB25DEA52A95} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout." (Eventid 10010 from source 'DistributedCOM')

I have reinstalled the DPM agent, but the problem immediatly returns.

Please help...

DPM shows Replica Inconsistent

Hello Guys,

We have set-up Exchange 2016 and  using DPM 2012 Service Pack 1 for backing up the databases. Copied the ESE and ESutil from Exchange bin to DPM bin folder. Installed the DPM agents on the server successfully, added the databases to the protection group successfully.

But after creating the replica it states that the replica is inconsistent. I am using Storage pool consisting 5 TB space. As of now there are two databases which are in protection group.

Below is the error message and also attached the screenshot:

Data consistency verification check failed for LOGS of Exchange Mailbox Database Mailbox Database 21 on Mailboxserver1.contoso.com (ID 30146 Details: Unknown error (0xc0000135) (0xC0000135)).

Unable to backup new database on exchange 2013 server because DPM database not refresh information

Hello

I have an DPM server 2012 R2 making backup to exchange server 2013, but because we remove some databases and create a new, now is not possible to make backups of the system

I already remove and install the DPM agent sometimes but everytime i try to create the exchange protection group it display to me the names a two old databases that we removed and not give me the actual working database

the information we normally get is :


915 The operation failed because the data source VSS component <Component>is missing. Make sure that the protected data source is installed properly and that the VSS writer service is running.

Can anyone help to identify and solve this problem ?

Recovery of Mailboxes

Hello Team,

Need assistance in recovering the mailbox. I have installed DPM 2012 R2 to backup Exchange 2016 databases. Followed the best practice. The jobs are being successfully backed up, wanted to test the recovery. 

Its prompting three options when trying to recover Recovery Database, Network Drive and Tape.

I would like to know how to recover only single mailbox without recovering entire database. Is there any possibility to recover just one single database to PST or a shared folder.
