Dpmfilterbitmap filling up drive

$

I have a Exchange 2007 CCR cluster and on one node I have 30 GB of "DpmFilterBitmap{9EB----}" - files.

Oldest is from 2014-11-16 and on the other node the oldest is the retention of the backup ie 60 days.

How can I remove the dpmfilterbitmap-files from the node that has to many files?

Logs for 1 Exchange 2010 database not truncating after a successful backup

$

Exchange 2010 SP3 UR6 DAG (2 nodes in the DAG)
5 databases on each node (active, passive)
DPM 2012 SP1

DPM console shows that all databases were backed up successfully each night
However, Exchange powershell says that only 4 of the 5 were backed up the previous night, it is the same database each time. The logs are not truncating either (almost as if both backups are copy backups....which is not possible).

The application event log on the server says it is successful:

The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer instance 434b9a21-f51b-4ff6-982e-8f872893cb8b has successfully completed the backup of database 'database-in-question'.

Database log truncation has been requested for this database. Log truncation will occur on the active copy after the next log generation is created. Log truncation will occur automatically on the passive copies after that log file is copied.

If I go to the DPM console and do a backup of the database, it is successful and logs are truncated (no difference in the application logs). Exchange powershell indicates that it is successful too. I have restarted the DPM server and both mailbox servers. I back up once per day, there are typically about 40GB of log files for this database prior to backup.

Exchange database back up error 'Replica is Inconsistent'

$

I am running exchange 2013 with DPM protection. The exchange database is mounted and running fine, it is however generating a rapidly growing list of E02**.log files. on the exchange server. I am running a full backup through DPM on the volume disk and also the database itself. The database is returning a 'Replica is inconsistent' error.

I have transferred eseutil.exe and ese.dll files from exchange server to Dpm server location.

I have ran a consistency check on the database within DPM. I have tried re-creating the protection group but to no avail.

Any ideas on how to resolve the 'replica is inconsistent' error?

Thanks

DPM 2012 R2/Exchange 2013 - An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions

We have been seeing an issue more frequently where DPM cannot backup passive copies of Exchange DBs on our DAG. In the DPM console, we frequently see warnings indicating that the DPM server can’t communicate with the agent on a DAG node; we get the “agent is unreachable” error. If we reboot the server, the issue will subside for a few days but eventually return. If we let the Exchange server go, it too will eventually correct itself and DPM will eventually reconnect and back it up. I see the following error in the application logs while this is transpiring:

Event 7024 - Application Log - Source: Service Control Manager

I’m not finding anything online related to this error; at least not specific to Exchange and DPM. I did find this article, https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756369(v=ws.10).aspx where following the steps we incurred these results:

C:\Windows\system32>sc query DPMRA

SERVICE_NAME: DPMRA

        TYPE              : 10  WIN32_OWN_PROCESS

        STATE             : 1  STOPPED

        WIN32_EXIT_CODE   : 1066  (0x42a)

        SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 10013  (0x271d)

        CHECKPOINT        : 0x0

        WAIT_HINT         : 0x0

I can ping the Exchange server from the DPM server and vice-versa, I can set the MTU size to 1472 and ping both ways, tracecert and net view show no issues, and a wbemtest is successful. I do have ports 5718 & 5719 reserved on the Exchange servers, but if I run a netstat test on the Exchange servers I see that the “w3wp.exe” (IIS Worker Process) is using port 5718. If the recommendation is to use different ports because Exchange is using the default DPM ports, can someone make a suggestion or recommendation of what port range to use for DPM so Exchange does not interfere?

DPM 2012 R2 Exchange Sync Schedule

$

Hi,

I would like to change my sync schedule of exchange protectiongroup and do not know how to set it up correctly.

My Backup contains hyper-v and exchange backups in different protection groups.
The hyper-v backup runs at 22:30, the exchange backup at 20:30 with hourly sync.
While the hyper-v backup is running the sync job of the exchange protection group fails.
My goal is now to set the hourly sync job with a exclusion from 22:30 to 23:30.

How can I do that?

Thanks.

With kind regards,

Torsten

DPM 2012 R2, EX2007SP3, and EX2013CU5 Coexistence Scenario - Failure to Backup Both Sources to 1 DPM Server

$

All, I've got the following Exchange Coexistence Scenario that I'm attempting to backup:

Exchange 2007 SP3 RU12 - 2 MBX CCRs, 5 MBX standalones

Exchange 2013 CU5 - 1 DAG with 6 nodes, all multirole

And I am attempting to back it up with:

DPM 2012 R2 (KB3009516 update applied) - 1 DPM server with storage and tape library installed, 1 SQL server (dedicated)

The problem that I'm running into is that as part of the Exchange backup prerequisites it's stating that I need the latest ESE.DLL and ESEUTIL.EXE that exist in the environment, but I'm running into errors backing up 2007 when I have the 2013 ESE.DLL and ESEUTIL.EXE files in the BIN directory, and errors backup up 2013 when I have the 2007 files in the BIN directory - and obviously since they're named the same, they can't both exist at the same time!

Does anyone know of a workaround for this without me having to dedicate another piece of hardware - along with storage - to backup this environment?

The sad part is that I can manually swap out the files and back either one up - and if I have to do that... well, someone should have figured out a better solution to this a long time ago.

Single Exchange Database Failing to backup - any ideas?

Hi

I am backing up an exchange server which has 4 mailbox databases.  The protection group is setup and 3 out of the 4 databases are backing up successfully.  The points I have found and checked:

Error Message:

The protection agent on <DPM-SERVER.DOMAIN> was temporarily unable to respond because it was in an unexpected state. (ID 60 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909B0).

It appears that the DPM server is failing to respond rather than the protected server but why?

  • DCOM appears to be OK
  • DNS appears to be OK
  • Circular Logging is off
  • If I delete the member from the PG and re add then the replica creation backs up all the data 250Gb and then sits and eventually fails before starting a consistency check which subsequently fails.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks,

Alastair

New Install - Unable Enumerate Contents...

$

Hi, our first exposure to DPM, new install on W2K12R2 with DPM 2012 R2 UR6. We're trying to use it to only backup the databases of an Exchange 2013 DAG (IP-less config / cluster type).

In 'Select group members' for new Protection Group, we expand the EX13 DAG but receive the following datasource enumeration details pop-up:

"DPM is unable to enumerate contents in \\?\Volume{c7965e73-d31c-11e4-80b5-806e6f6e6963}\ on the protected computer EX13DAGMember1.domain.xxx. Recycle Bin, System Volume Information folder, non-NTFS volumes, DFS links, CDs, Quorum Disk (for cluster) and other removable media cannot be protected. (ID: 38)"

When I continue on with the setup, I get to the end where the replica's are created for each database, but they all fail as 'Replica is inconsistent', and I'm wondering if it's related to the enumerate error above?

I've looked at many articles with no answer just yet (and our C:\WindowsImageBackup folder is valid too). I hoping someone more experienced might have some ideas?

Thanks for any help!

A few Exchange DPM related questions

$

Hi - I will shortly be using my DPM server to protect a new Exchange 2010 and 2013 environment. Exchange data will probably be around 200GB to start.

DPM 2012 R2 is already running. An Exchange 2003 server will be migrated to an interim Exchange 2010 to be backed up by DPM and then subsequently to a two node Exchange 2013 DAG.

1) I read that I will need to copy the ese and eseutil files to the DPM Server. Since EX2010 will be introduced first, I will copy those versions to DPM. Later on when I introduce EX2013, will I need to copy those versions over to the DPM server? Will those versions be compatible with EX 2010 as well?

2) For EX2013, I will have two servers in a DAG. Should I perform full backups on both DAG members? Or full on one and copy on the second? If we need to use copy on the second DAG server, what impact does that have on transaction logs on that server? Should circular logging be enabled on the "copy" server? Or does the federated log truncation feature used by DPM take care of the logs on the second DAG node even though it is only using copy backups?

3) The short term storage setting "Synchronization Frequency" will perform exchange log backups and truncate logs, right?

4) I currently use Azure for long term storage for SQL and file data protected by DPM. Can I use that also for Exchange data for both my standalone EX2010 databases and the 2013 DAG databases?

Thank you!

Best Practices for Exchange 2013 protection with DPM

$

Hello,

I am configuring DPM to protect an Exchange Server but I'm not sure about one specific option I have.

As you can see below, there is an application backup "Mailbox Database 06...." and the volume backup of "e:\" drive which also includes the EDB file. This probably means that I'm using twice the amount of space for the database.

The question is, is it safe to exclude "*.edb" files because I already have the application backup? Can I do a bare metal recovery without the EDP file and restore the exchange server? Of course I believe that I will need to recover the database after completing the BMR. Is that correct?

(also, this is a VM, so I will be doing a BMR on a VM if this changes anything at all)

Thanks,

Baybars

Problem with DPM 2012 R2 & Exchange 2010 Protection Setup

$

I am having an issue with DPM 2012 R2 and Exchange 2010 setup. I have 3 Exchange servers in 3 different locations. All are fully patched with Exchange SP3 Rollup 10. I have verified that the ESEUTIL files are the same version on all servers including the DPM server. I am able to get one of my servers setup in a protection group without an issue. The other two servers fail during the Prerequisite check when I go to add them to the Protection group. The one server that is working, has the same patch levels etc as the others. I followed the prerequisite guide here - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757768.aspx. I have checked the event viewer on the DPM for any details and nothing there. I checked the event viewer on the two Exchange servers that are not protected and nothing there either. Does the prerequisite check only happen on modules on the DPM server? If so, why is one server OK and the other two not? If it is checking the servers, what prerequisites should I check for that are not there?

Thanks,
Chris

Hello,
i have problem with MS Exchange 2013 backup trough SCDPM 2012 R2.

When i am creating new protection group with Exchange DAG and click in protection reosources to specified DAG, then is about 30 minutes of waiting and accidentaly i see all Exchange Databases. Did anybody know somethink about that?

Enviroment: 3x MS Exchange 2013 (different server version), 1x DAG with cca 40 databases, 1x SC DPM 2012 R2

I have copied newest eseutil.exe and ese.dll. When i click to other clusters (fileserver) or exchange servers separately it is only few second to load resources.

Thank you!

Protecting a 3rd copy of a database in an Exchange 2010 DAG

$

I am running an Exchange 2010 SP3 UR6 2 member DAG. DAG member 1 has 4 active databases and DAG member 2 has the passive copy. I use DPM 2012 (not R2) to protect the DAG, we do an Express Full each night and one db gets a "Full" backup and the other gets a "Copy" backup. I have had no issues. I just added a 3rd DAG member, it will hold the same 4 copies. Of course, at any point it could hold some or all of the Active db's. The question I have is do I need to back the databases up on that new 3rd DAG member? It doesn't seem like I would need to since I am already backing up 2 copies of each db.

Exchange 2010 Recovery Database sizing...

$

I use DPM 2012 to protect my Exchange 2010 DAG (SP3 UR6). I do an Express Full once per 24 hours on each database (no incrementals or anything like that). I have a Recovery database on one of my mailbox servers, but am trying to determine how to size it.

Does the recovery database need to be just as large as the largest database (the largest database will never get more than 1TB in size) OR do I also need to factor in the size of the Log partition as well? For instance, I have a database lun of 1TB and a corresponding database log lun of 500GB, and they will never get bigger.....so does my recovery db lun need to be 1TB or 1.5TB (to include log files)? I think since I just do Express Full backups that all I will need is 1TB since it would just restore the database.

Recover storage pool space for unneeded exchange database backup

$

Hi -

When creating a protection group, I accidentally gave a very small Exchange database a much larger portion of the storage pool than it needs. I will shortly be removing this item. How can I recover the space in the storage pool?

Also, in the same protection group as the databases I am backing up the Bare Metal and File Volume level data for the same server. If I have the entire volume selected for file backup that the Exchange database resides in, will DPM attempt to back up the MDB at the file level? I believe it is aware and will not but want to confirm.

Thanks!

dpm 2010 exchange 2010 backups are failing

$

Hi, I'm getting an error which does not seem to match in the DPM 2010 ID codes. Randomly, I have backups of an exchange 2010 DAG that are failing. The backup will run for a short time (5mints..up to 10minuts) and then will fail with the following error:

Type: Recovery point
Status: Failed
Description: Backup failed as another copy of 'user' database is currently being backed up. (ID 32628 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D51)
 More information
End time: 4/25/2011 10:37:27 PM
Start time: 4/25/2011 10:26:55 PM
Time elapsed: 00:10:31
Data transferred: 0 MB
Cluster node -
Recovery Point Type Incremental Sync
Source details: 06001
Protection group: EXCH2010 - 06001

I've tried restarting the DPM server to troubleshoot. I say this happens randomly because I've had some backups successfully complete against the same exchange server. The only other item that seems odd is when creating protection groups against the DAG, the intial lookup seems to take forever. Not sure what to try next.

Backing up Exchange 2010 from a Server 2008 VM to Azure

$

Hi,

we are using an on premise Exchange 2010 installed on a Server 2008 (not R2) VM running on a Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V server.

I understand that there is support for backing up Exchange via the DPM agent and that Server 2008 is supported as a platform. The problem is that during the installation of the DPM agent, it insists on installing Virtual Server 2005. I am not particularly happy about installing a hypervisor on a virtual machine running Exchange.

Is it at all possible to install the DPM agent without Virtual Server 2005? Why would we need it at all? I have noticed that it does not do this on Server 2008 R2. If the recoverey involves mounting a VHD or a virtual machine, we can easily du that outside the Exchage VM on the 2008 R2 Hyper-V server. We are currently using Azure to backup file shares on a physical 2008 R2 server and that works fine, but our Exchange server is currently without a decent backup solution.

Can we use Azure for this or do we have to find another vendor?

Erik
