Exchange 2010 mailbox restore with DPM2012 error

Hi All,

We’re using DPM 2012 SP1 with rollup 3. (version 4.1.3333.0). I would like to recovery exchange 2010 mailbox database to RDB with DPM, but I always got the following error message.

Description:       The recovery jobs for Exchange Mailbox Database xxxxx Mailboxes that started at Monday, January 28, 2013 1:57:10 PM, with the destination of exchange2010.domain.com, have completed. Most or all jobs failed to recover the requested data. (ID 3111)

DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for D:\ExchangeStorage\ Mailboxes.edb on exchange2010.domain.com (ID 2033 Details: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (0x80070020))”

What’s the problem? How do I know which process is using the database?

Thanks,

Question about incremental backups of Exchange 2010 DB with two exchange servers

I do not have an issue, just need to clarify a few things and see if in my scenario, are there any after effects.

We are using DPM 2010 with all service patches on a 2008r2 physical box

We have Exchange 2010 in a DAG configuration.  Two exchnage (exchange1 and exchange2) boxes control access to he mailbox database. these are 2008r2 physical boxes with Exchange 2010 sp2 rollup 6. ( we have not made the move to sp3 yet.)

In dpm, we have exchange in a PG. using the eseutil locally on dpm.  and have it set Run for log files only. The Database copy for a full backup is set against our exchange1 box for the mailbox database and public folders database. Also, there is a Synchronization frequency set for 15 minutes.

What we are seeing is when the mailbox database is mounted on exchange1; all work well. No uncommn event are recorded.

However, when the mailbox database is mounted on exchange2, there are many many more events written.  it looks like the Information Store for the mailbox database is stoppped, there is a VSS writter freeze against the database. I see that an incremental backup has started, has stopped, then the database is thawed, mounted etc...   These are all successful messages.  There are no issues or errors.

I am just interested to know why this happens, if there is a scenario or type of Protection group configuration that I can make to prevent this, or if i can expect and sort of impact on dpm, the exchange servers, or all the way down to the user experience.

thanks

Ian

Receiving an error when trying to add Exchange server to DPM (Error ID 964)

I'm trying to create a new protection group on my DPM 2010 server and I am having trouble.

My setup is as follows:

2 Servers, Primary is Win 2003 R2 32-bit domain controller, secondary is Win 2008 R2 64-bit Exchange 2010 SP1 and DPM 2010 (I wish I could put DPM on its own but we do not have the budget, has plenty of memory and processor to run apps).

I am trying to create a protection group (using the wizard) to backup the Exchange mailbox database, but I am receiving an error when clicking on the + to expand the selection window.

Any thoughts or ideas on what I could be doing wrong?  This is a fresh install of DPM and Exchange has been running perfectly for a few months now.
Thanks in advanced for your help!

Best Practise request: When protecting Exchange running in Hyper-V VM, using DPM 2012 SP1, where does the agent go?

Is the agent best installed on the Host OS or on the Guest OS to provide the most comprehensive and fine grained Exchange Server recovery options? Please advise for each scenario. Thank you in advance!

Secondly, will Windows Server 2012 R2 change the equation?

Scenario 1

  • DPM
VM running on Host OS Hyper-V Server 2012
Guest OS Windows Server 2012 Standard
DPM 2012 SP1 using Direct Attached Storage (DAS) via pass through disks
  • Exchange

DPM 2012 Database Recovery Options

Good Morning,

This is a two part question.

1. If I want to run a DR test to recover a complete DB (not just the mailbox). What is the easiest way to complete this? We have 1 active, 2 copies in our DAG. So every time you cut down the info store and rename the DB, it just mounts on the copy.

2. Secondly, when backing up a primary DPM server with a secondary DPM server, do i just need to make sure and protect the SQL DB?

Thanks,

DPM 2012 Log Truncation with Exchange 2010

Good Morning,

My question centers around log truncation for Exchange 2010. If i run a full backup on my copies, no incrementals. When does the log truncation occur, and does DPM complete that? Or does Exchange truncate it's own logs and DPM takes care of itself?

Thanks,

MKC

DPM 2012 SP1 - Exchange 2010 and 2013, Replica is inconsistent

Hi,

We have DPM 2012 backing up some of our VMs, including Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013. We have never had a successful backup with no errors for the Exchange databases. Have tried:

1. Restarting IIS on Exchange servers

2. Installing Visual C++ on Exchange 2013

3. Dismounting mailbox databases and truncating logs

4. All vsswriter statuses are stable

Error messages on the Exchange 2010 are:

"Event 9782 MSExchangeIS: Exchange VSS Writer (instance f7510d9f-4e76-44ce-8e62-f4f6b262fc7b:5) has completed the backup of database 'Admin Mailbox' with errors. The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database."

"Event 2007 ESE: Information Store (1780) Shadow copy instance 5 aborted."

Error messages on Exchange 2013 are:

"Event 2038 MsExchangeRepl: Microsoft Exchange VSS Writer backup failed. No log files were truncated. Instance 4da58804-0535-469d-a2c3-6df332dfab33. Database f39b8e25-7a5c-4baf-b4fe-fbe8844fc463."

"Event 2006 ESE: Information Store - Primary Staff (7416) Shadow copy instance 2 completed successfully."

"Event 2034 MsExchangeRepl: The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer (Instance 4da58804-0535-469d-a2c3-6df332dfab33) failed with error FFFFFFFC when processing the backup completion event."

Please help. Backups worked fine in DPM 2010. SQL databases are being backed up successfully from same DPM 2012 server.

Thank you.

DPM 2012 SP1 Error Backing Up Exchange 2010 and 2013

Hello,

I am attempting to backup exchange 2010 and exchange 2013 with DPM 2012 SP1.

The backup starts and data begins to be transferred. However the backup stops before completion. On the DPM server the protection status is Replica is inconsistent. On the protected Exchange Server I am seeing the following Errors:

EventID 9782

Exchange VSS Writer (instance f1246312-710b-4287-a2fa-69d1bbf9b706:1) has completed the backup of database 'Mailbox Database One' with errors. The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database.

EventID 2007

Information Store (5136) Shadow copy instance 1 aborted.

I just installed DPM 2012 SP1 doing a clean install.  I previously used DPM 2012 RTM to backup this exchange server.  I uninstalled the previous DPM Agent on the Exchange Server prior to Installing DPM 2012 SP1.

Does anyone have some advice?

Exchange 2010 SP3 on Windows Server 2008R2 SP1, DPM 2012 SP1 on Windows Server 2012.

DPM 2010 does not allow to restore a database to a file share

Hi everybody,

I've a customer which usees DPM 2010 and Exchange 2010 SP1 is not able to browse with DPM console to the mailboxlevel of one database. There are other databases where it's possible to browse to mailboxlevel. Therefore it's not possible to restore this database to a file share (option is greyed out)

Any idea ?

Unable to protect Exchange 2010 databases on secondary DPM server

I am trying to protect 4 Exchange 2010 databases that are part of a DAG on a secondary DPM server.  When I add the PG, I get to the Review Disk Allocation and get the following error:

The operation failed because the data source VSS component 287d78db-a4bb-4474-aaa5-aeac38aeec45 is missing.

Check to see that the protected data source is installed properly  and the VSS writer service is running.

ID: 915
Details: The operation completed successfully (0x0)

Does anybody have any idea what that means or how to get past it?

dpm 2010 exchange 2010 backups are failing

Hi, I'm getting an error which does not seem to match in the DPM 2010 ID codes. Randomly, I have backups of an exchange 2010 DAG that are failing. The backup will run for a short time (5mints..up to 10minuts) and then will fail with the following error:

Type: Recovery point
Status: Failed
Description: Backup failed as another copy of 'user' database is currently being backed up. (ID 32628 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D51)
 More information
End time: 4/25/2011 10:37:27 PM
Start time: 4/25/2011 10:26:55 PM
Time elapsed: 00:10:31
Data transferred: 0 MB
Cluster node -
Recovery Point Type Incremental Sync
Source details: 06001
Protection group: EXCH2010 - 06001

I've tried restarting the DPM server to troubleshoot. I say this happens randomly because I've had some backups successfully complete against the same exchange server. The only other item that seems odd is when creating protection groups against the DAG, the intial lookup seems to take forever. Not sure what to try next.

DPM 2010 and Exchange 2007 best practices

Hi,

I have a number of DPM jobs failing.

I'm using Exchange 2007 and it's being backed up by DPM 2010. I have  a lot of Exchange failures over the last 3 days such as backup job failures and inconsistent replicas.

Can someone point me in the direction of a best practice guide for Exchange 2007 with DPM 2010? For example, when backing up an Exchange 2007 server with DPM 2010, should I select the Exchange storage group, as well as the log file for that storage group? If I don't select the log file for backup, will I have trouble restoring the database? I currently have a lot of VSS errors logged within the Exchange server's application log and I'm wondering if VSS is trying to quiesce the DB and the log volume (separate volume) simultaneously and this is causing a backup failure.

I'm running into an issue where I'm getting DPM backups for Exchange failing over the last 3 days. DPM complains that the agent is unreachable within the event log, despite the agent showing as "status OK, update available" within the agents view of the management console.

On Exchange 2007, I see a lot of VSS backup errors in the event logs as mentioned above.

Also, when does DPM truncate the Exchange log file? Only during a full DPM backup or would it do it during a consistency check as well?

Thanks

Hi,

I have DPM 2012 to take backups of my Exchange 2010 Databases. I have NAS storage and don't have SAN storage.

DPM Agent Installation

Hi,

Previously i was using DPM 2010 and DPM agents were installed on my mailbox servers for taking backups.

Due to my DPM server crash, i have build DPM  2012 server and i have removed my previous DPM agent from my exchange mailboxes manually.

Now when i trying to install new DPM server agent on mail servers following error appears.

'Protection Agent version 4.1.3313.0

Error: Data Protection manager Error ID: 270

The agent operation failed on SERVER NAME because DPM could not communicate with the DPM protection agent. The computer may be protected by another DPM server, or the protection agent may have been uninstalled on the protected computer.
If SERVER NAME is a workgroup server, the password for the DPM user account could have been changed or may have expired.

Check the following to troubleshoot this issue:
1) If the agent is not installed on SERVER NAME, run DpmAgentInstaller.exe with this DPM computer as a parameter. For details, see the DPM Deployment Guide.
2) To attach the computer correctly to this DPM server, run the SetDpmServer tool with the -Add option on the protected computer.
3) If the computer is protected by another DPM server, or if the protection agent has been uninstalled, remove the protected data sources on this computer from active protection. Then, remove the entry of this computer from the Agents tab in the Management task area.
4) If SERVER NAME is a workgroup server, run SetDpmServer with the -UpdatePassword flag on the protected computer and Update-NonDomainServerInfo.ps1 on the DPM server to update the password.
5) If the DPM server and the protected computer are not in the same domain, ensure that there is a two-way trust setup between the two domains.

I am using domain administrative credential to install agents.

Kindly help me to solve this problem.

I am looking into replacing Backup Exec with DMP 2012 or 2012R2 (When Available).

Do you think DPM is as good at this as BE2012 for Exchange backup and recovery?

What are some down sides to using DPM instead of Backup Exec.

Backup 2 Exchange Server in two domain with one DPM 2012 Server ?

Hi all,

I have Exchange Server 2010 on Domain01.com, and Exchange Server 2013 on Domain02.com.

But I have only one DPM Server 2012 on Domain01.com.

I can add both exchange server to DPM Agent, but the files eseutil.exe and ese.dll seem not the same on Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013 so I can not backup at the same time.

Is it possible to have a way to backup without install another one DPM server ?
